I sent a new manuscript off to my agent today. Fingers crossed, I guess? I'm writing without a contract these days, which is always scary. These past few years have been...not good. My agent is keen to have me write something "super marketable," which to her means something that will sell quickly and easily because it's similar to stuff that is already out there. I would also like to sell quickly and easily! But we are trapped in the following patttern:
Me: writes something kinda different
Agent: I cannot sell this.
(manuscript dies)
Me: tries to please agent/the market by writing something trendy
Market: Yawn. We don't want this.
(manuscript dies)
Me: writes a passion project
Agent: I cannot sell this.
(manuscript dies)
Me: writes a tried-and-true thing about an ordinary woman solving her sister's murder
Market: This is stale.
(manuscript dies)
It's hard not to feel like I am feeding my new manuscript into the teeth of an industry that doesn't want me. But then, my books are popular with readers? I don't know anymore and honestly feel a little crazy these days. Stay tuned, I guess, because we're at this point in the cycle:
Me: writes something crazy and fun!
Agent: ???????
