Passing the Torch
James and John Harper founded their publishing firm, J. & J. Harper, in 1817. In 1833 the firm changed its name to Harper & Brothers and began to use variations on the publishers’ device shown above: two hands with a torch.
According to the 1889 edition of The Book Buyer : A Summary of American and Foreign Literature, the meaning behind the Harper & Brothers device stems from Book I of Plato’s Republic, which has a reference to a torch race at a festival in honor of a Thracian Goddess that reads: “Carrying torches, they will pass them on to one another.”
Here we see two variations on the Harper & Brothers device from the front covers of two books. The first example is from 1846, the second example is from 1856. Although Harper & Brothers has since become HarperCollins Publishers LLC, resulting from a merger with Scottish publisher, William Collins, Sons, the torch has remained a part of their legacy. The current HarperCollins device combines the two firms’ logos: a torch above a fountain.

Biography Of A Publishing House / Available at www.draw-down.com / In 1948 Stefan and Franciszka Themerson founded the #Gaberbocchus Press in #London. Over a period of three decades this #publishinghouse produced over 60 titles, and although the couple’s work clearly has roots in the international avant-garde of the interbellum, they maintained a high level of independence in all of their activities. Their publications are characterised by improvised techniques and materials, as well as by experiments with word and image (“not best-sllers, but best-lookers.” Eccentric, original, and expressive of the identity of its contents, each book contains a distinct combination of text, image, design, materials. This volume pays tribute to the rare phenomenon that was Gaberbocchus, and is fully illustrated with book cover designs and layouts. A wonderful addition to the library of those collecting #booksaboutbooks, book and #publishinghistory, and artists working with the #bookform. Designed by #PietGerards / Text in Dutch and English
Searchlight Books Wartime publishing Publishing during WW2 was rather a mushroom jungle. Hundreds of small imprints were launched, most didn't survive and were more a way of circumnavigating paper rationing as a new publisher could apply for a quota, whereas established publishers were rationed. Their allocations were small though so print runs were low and these wartime paperbacks are difficult to find now. #wartime #publishinghistory #paperrationing #mushroomjungle #searchlightbooks #stephenspender

I don’t remember where or when I acquired this book, but I finally picked it up and read it this weekend and it was in all of my wheelhouses: heresy, the history of books and publishing, science history, did I mention heresy? An amazing read. . . #books #nonfiction #history #sciencehistory #publishinghistory #outoftheflames #lawrenceandnancygoldstone #servetus
