Okay, let's do this thing! . Today is the first day of going through the comments from the reviewers of my first ever academic paper. My fellow academics here will likely know all about this already, but for those who don't here's the gist: . 1. You spend a very long time doing analysis and getting results and creating a discussion that eventually emerges as the first draft of The Paper (trust me, the capital letters are necessary...) . 2. You spend a few weeks rereading and re-working this draft until you're happy with it. . 3. You send this to your supervisors / co-authors for them to read through and edit/ comment on (depending on how many co-authors you have, getting back these comments can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months...) . 3. You cry a bit when you see the amount of comments and suggested edits, but after taking deep breaths you buckle down and work through them and indeed, it ends up a much stronger paper. . 4. Repeat points 2/3 as many times as your mental health allows. . 5. This is it. This is the moment. It’s finally ready. There are more comments, but there will always be more comments, and at this particular moment you have decided that enough is enough and it’s time to send it in to the journal editorial committee. This committee will then contact two or three (usually) anonymous reviewers, who will look over The Paper with fresh eyes and make comments and suggestions of their own. . 6. You receive back these comments. You do some yoga, eat some chocolate, wonder if it's too late to change your career path, and then eventually buckle down and get to it. . 7. You make the necessary changes, send it to your co-authors (hoping that they won't have too many extra comments...), and send The Updated Paper back to the editors. . 8. They reply that all is well, The Paper is fantastic, it will be included in the journal, and you go off to drink a celebratory bottle of wine. . 9. You repeat steps 1-8... . I am currently at step 6. The yoga has been done, the chocolate has been eaten, and it is now time to face the comments. Ever since I was younger I've always done a million things at once, which usually meant I was busy pretty much all the time. Apparently this hasn't changed 😅 I'm currently doing my PhD but also still play my French horn in the occasional concert, am a member of the city waterpolo team, have a small business making terrariums (more on that later) and am also currently doing an online postgraduate diploma at the London school of journalism. It's my plan B, in case I encounter the same difficulty in job-finding that I had after my masters... And I think it's very relevant to this week's #instachallenge prompt: #publishorperish In any academic discipline we are usually judged on our contributions to knowledge, which is normally based on how many papers we have published. The problem with Archaeology is that these papers are then tucked away in a little scientific journal and no non-specialist every gets to hear about them, unless they're "breaking news" about something big. I think that this needs to change. Academic institutions should make their knowledge more accessible to the general public. Only in this way can people understand exactly what we are trying to do, which will then prevent things like budget cuts to what the majority of the population probably thinks of as an "unnecessary" research area.
