Many people in the United States have expressed that they would welcome Puerto Rico as a state. However, the vast majority of these people come from a place of sympathy, rather than reason.
Sympathy, or any emotion, for that matter, is not sufficient to formulate opinions, certainly not in serious matters. A simple dive into the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the US should compel anyone to advocate for the independence of the island instead.
