Cauldron Ice Cream, 526 S Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101
I crave egg puffs/eggettes more often than ice cream, but at Cauldron, you have to buy ice cream to get the puffle cone. Honestly, their ice cream is better than their puffle cone, which makes me sad.
Cauldron makes its ice cream to order using liquid nitrogen. They care about presentation. They’re famous for puffle cones and their rose shaped scoops. There were about 14 ice cream flavors to choose from, including rose H2O, milk & cereal, Vietnamese coffee, Earl grey lavender, S’mores, mint chocolate chip, etc. They had one vegan option and two seasonal flavors, Matcha Latte and Maple Bourbon.
You can get the ice cream in a cup, sugar cone (+$1), or puffle cone ($7, choice of one scoop of ice cream, flavors: original, red velvet, churro). Additional toppings are 50 cents each. Since it’s made to order, I doubt they offer samples. The puffle cones are made to order too. They also have drinks that are topped with ice cream roses.
* Matcha latte ice cream w/ puffle cone and whipped cream ($7): The puffle cone was warm, soft, and dense. I like it when the bits in between the puffs are crunchy, but their puffle cone was just soft. The puffs were cakey and not too sweet. The whipped cream was thick and barely sweetened. It was dusted with bitter matcha powder. The matcha ice cream was dense, very smooth, and very creamy. It did taste fresh. The matcha flavor was sweet but smooth. It was a big scoop.
If you want the puffle cone by itself, it’s still $7. There aren’t tables but there’s a ledge where you can stand and eat or sit on a stool. The décor is simple and minimalist with white tiles and concrete floors. You can watch them make your ice cream. One wall with the neon sign is there for Instagram. The music was very loud.
