The Addams Family (2019):
I did not want to see this movie because I was thinking it was going to be a boring attempt at making a classic “reboot” and I ended up only watching it much later because it was free with a rental. And boy was I surprised by how much shit they packed into this movie:
-The dangers of familial expectations, not questioning anything on the internet, isolationism, smothering, neglectful parenting, fear, propaganda, and that every child is a product of the community that they are raised in, good or bad and it’s the responsibility of the community to contribute positively to growth and development of those children.
Puggsley had an actual story line dealing with the pressures of his coming-of-age ceremony that he is clearly not ready for. And the fact that his family is putting way too much pressure on him when he honestly can’t handle it.
Wednesday got to enjoy teenage rebellion while also exploring the importance of letting children experience ideology and communities that are not like their own in an attempt to better understand their own world views without smothering them into submission.
Mortitia and Gomez get to actually have flaws as parents and while they are good people, they do make harmful choices that end up affecting their children emotionally.
This movie isn’t perfect, it’s got a lot of dated jokes and is a little slow and stale sometimes, but the themes and the general message are really amazing. I was genuinely impressed.
