THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) dir. Barry Sonnenfeld
Wednesday Ignatius Itt Styling Head
I discovered the cartoons of Charles Addams at the Santa Rosa public library when I was a kid. The library had at least a half a dozen collections of his work. I loved them. The original versions of the “Addams Family” made quite a few appearances in the books.
I’m not sure how old I was went I discovered The Addams Family in reruns on TV. I’m sure I was older than I’d been when I first read the cartoons but I was still a kid. Both The Addams Family and The Munsters were available. I remember watching more Munsters than Addamses, I think due to their broadcast time fitting my schedule better. I liked the Addamses more then the Munsters. The Addams weren’t as, well, evil as the cartoon originals but they were cheerfully weird and didn’t care who knew it. The poor Munsters just wanted to fit in and couldn’t.
I haven’t watched every iteration of the family. Checking wikipedia I see that I’ve missed a lot of them. I did watch the first season of Wednesday a few months ago. As a teen dramedy set in a magical school it was fun. I do think it was a terrible Addams Family show. Too much family angst, too much concern and worry over things the real Addamses would have embraced or laughed at. Too much putting things in proper boxes - sirens, witches, vampires, werewolves, hydes, ancient prophecies. Outcasts and normies? That’s Munster shit.
The second season of Wednesday is out. I understand that it’s popular and that a third season is likely. That’s fine. Maybe it will lead to viewers checking out the earlier other, more cheerfully macabre versions of the family.
