Hey! I hope you're having an AMAZING day!
If I'm not wrong, today is Durga Pooja? And, I'm curios to know more about it. I have not even a very vague idea about why it's celebrated, because my family doesn't celebrate it. Could you educate me on Durga Pooja?
Today is not Durga Puja actually. Today is Mahalaya.
Lunar calendar has fortnights called pakshas. One such paksha is Pitripaksha, which is a period of mourning for deceased ancestors. On Mahalaya Pitripaksha ends and Devipaksha begins which is the paksha where the Mother Goddess or Shakti is worshipped. The Durga Pujo starts 5 days later and continues for the next 5 days.
Also on Mahalaya the eyes are drawn on the Durga idols.
Durga Pujo was originally meant to be celebrated during spring or Basanta. But was shifted to autumn. Ram, when he was going to Lanka to fight Ravana and rescue Sita, prayed to the Goddess. And from then onwards the timings shifted. The autumnal worship is called Akal Bodhon in Bengali which means ' invocation at a wrong time '. The victory over Ravana happened on the 10th day of Devipaksha and is celebrated as Dussehra in large parts of India.
In major parts of India the nine days before Dussehra are celebrated as Navaratri ( nine nights ) where a different form of the Goddess is worshipped on each day. In bengal Durga Puja takes place for 5 days which marks the time Durga fought with and eventually slayed the asura called Mahish. Bengalis treat the Goddess as their own daughter who has come back to her home for five days with her children, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesh. And the last day is called Vijaya Dashami.
Now we come to the legend.
There was an asura called Mahish. He prayed to Lord Brahma for days on end, standing on one leg. Brahma pleased with him, granted him one boon. Mahishasur asked him to grant him such powers that no god, no man and no animal in the trilok would be able to kill him. Thus armed with such powers he went forth to conquer the trilok. Finally he stormed into Swargalok with his army and overthrew Indra. He took over the throne. None of the Gods could fight him. They ran to Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar to seek protection. After much thinking they decided to summon the Goddess or Shakti. They merged the Shaktis within them to call upon Her. She appeared in full glory. The Gods then gave her various weapons, armour, a lion and powers to ride into war. Thus Durga rode into battle. Her power shook the cosmos. Mahishasur at first underestimated her and sent his army. Her one hungkaar vaporized the entire army. He then sent his generals and they were killed just as quick. Finally he himself rode out to battle. A fierce battle started. He was a shape shifting asura. He took forms of animals to hide and attack. Finally he took the form of a buffalo ( mahish ) and charged at Her. She cut off his head and pierced her Trishul into his heart. Thus the Buffalo Demon was vanquished. No man, no god, no animal killed him. But a woman did. Good triumphed over evil.
