Life on Pulau Satumu has its compensations. Although only about 16km form a city of 2.4 million people, it looks like the stereotype of a tropical island.” “The staples the crew brings from the mainland are supplemented by bartering water, coffee and bread to Indonesians for fish, fresh fruit and vegetables.” “The quiet of Pulau Satumu is broken only by the Republic of Singapore Airforce. Half a kilometre to the north lies Pulau Senang, the “Isle of Ease”, or, as Mr Rodrigues calls it, “Devils Island”. A couple of times a month, the Air Force’s Skyhawks use Pulau Senang for bombing practice. “Very noisy”, he says sourly.
