Apple and Masimo Clash in U.S. Appeals Court Over Apple Watch Import Ban
Apple urged a U.S. appeals court to overturn a ruling that led to the removal of the blood-oxygen feature from its Apple Watches, following a patent dispute with medical tech company Masimo. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) had previously ruled that Apple’s pulse oximetry technology infringed on Masimo’s patents, resulting in a temporary import ban on the Series 9 and Ultra 2 models.
Apple argued the decision unfairly impacted users and was based on a product Masimo hadn’t yet launched when it filed its complaint. Masimo countered that Apple misused its technology after failed collaboration talks and that a finished product wasn’t needed to enforce its patent rights. The court is now reviewing whether the ITC ruling was justified.
