#pumpkin beetle

As soon as I saw the leaves start to change color, I knew it once more was time to visit the Pumpkin beetles and take part in there Evenguist activities. This year as I was eating some pumpkin pie, I started talking with someone from a species I had never met before, the Nigripennis. Eventually we got on the topic of their legend and just like all other Pumpkin beetle legends I found it fasinating.

The Nigripennis legend tells of a small boy who was struck by a sudden sickness and passed away. Unable to afford a proper barely his family ended up putting him in the ground in a hollowed out pumpkin. Soon after the boy miraculously returned home! However, he was not the same, his exoskeleton had been replaced by the gourd and leaves grew out of his joints as his wings rotted away.

On the night of Evenguist some Nigripennis claim to still be able to see his rotten form begging them to come join him in the afterlife.

There are many different charms in this world that bring good luck. The Hilaris believe that one of these charms is that of the mighty pumpkin. If a pumpkin, or something resembling a pumpkin is nearby then they are sure to keep bad luck at bay.

Some say that this is superstition, but I say why chance it? If they have found something that gives them confidence and luck why leave home without it?

Evenguist is celebrated slightly differently in every Pumpkin beetle town I've visited. For some, the food is the main highlight, for others it's there farming skills and once I even saw a town near a river race each other down its rapids. However, no matter where you go one thing will be constant and that is that pumpkins will be what all of the celebration is themed around. The food dishes will be made from pumpkins or look like them, the farming skills are all about who can grow the largest pumpkin and even the river racing town was doing there rapid riding in large, carved out pumpkins. Evenguist is truly a day to celebrate the mighty gourd.

#1622 - Aulocophora sp. - Pumpkin Beetle

Aulocophora is a large genus found in Africa, Asia and Australasia, but despite the common name their diet includes melons, gourds, cucumbers, and other curcubits. Adults eat the leaves, and the larvae burrow into the roots, and as you can probably guess they’re a serious pest. Most species are orange and black.
