BJJ Class #65 and Open Mat
Saturday 10/03/15
I got to work with Jaime (a blue belt who also has a background in wing chun) today. We started out with some punch defense. Response to hook punches using a hand draped over the bicep and keeping the elbow down. Turn into T-position, pinch knees and heel pic. Keep control of them and both arms as you lay them down moving into mount. For the straight punch, block across and duck under/enter to wrap the waist and use the heel trip as you sit down and pull them over.
Then we looked at a couple escapes from the bottom of north-south position. First we reviewed the one where you scoot up onto their leg, bridge and roll to that side. Then we did a new one (to me) where you frame across their waist under them (with your hands meeting on the same side their head is on if it’s off to a side), pendulum swing your legs back a forth and then hard to the side away from your hands as you push and create space to bring your knees in.
After class I talked with Jimmy about getting out of north-south if they are keeping their hips really low and he showed me some things but I’d still like to ask James for some more clarification at some point.
Open Mat felt really good today. Rolling with Jimmy got me tapped by arm bar a couple of times but I also tapped him once! and it was with a wrist lock (a first)! I rolled with one of the newer guys and got my first arm bar from guard too! I broke his posture and got it as he was pushing back up off me. It felt good to have that work in live rolling even if it was with a new guy. He asked and I even helped him run through the technique afterwards. I rolled with Daniel and he really is good at escaping my mount and keeping me in his side control. I got him with some weird kind of arm lock from the bottom though. My last roll was with Gill and we started on the feet. I’m not sure anyone got a takedown. We basically just lowered and fought for position on the ground anyway. He had a pretty slick pass to side control on me but It was a battle I don’t think anyone tapped. I almost had him at one point but he scrambled out and we were both so exhausted we called it a day. LOL.
