Another tune from the punk rock Quincy episode.
“Next Stop, Nowhere” is the name of the episode of the Quincy TV show that aired on Dec. 1, 1982 (39 years ago today!) where a band that was concocted for the show called Mayhem plays at a club where Quincy goes to get the real scoop on what this whole punk thing is all about. The episode is great in that it perfectly encapsulates mainstream society’s view of punk/hardcore music at the time. The utter contempt you can see in Quincy’s face as he watches the kids slam-dancing is even more hilarious (and perfect) than the assemblage of “punks” with their goofy clothes and makeup that have gathered for the show, including the girl who mistakes “the Coroner’s Office” for the name of Quincy’s *band* (oof). It’s so cringeworthy it’s great. I could only find one video that includes the entire episode, but it (the video) is pretty crappy, the sound is quiet and the video is cropped all weird. There is another pretty great video, though, that shows Mayhem play their song “Choke” that’s also pretty good. The lead singer of the band is so ridiculous, obviously an actor trying to act like what he thinks a punk is, calling the crowd ugly, the drummer who looks like s/he’s trying to act like Animal from the Muppets, and, well, just watch for yourself at the link below...
