Short Fic Prompt: Ruby and Sapphire. "How can anyone not be afraid of love?"
Hooo jeez I’m not confidentin my writing ability at all and I got a slight bit carried away with the length, but I gave this my best shot!! Thank you for sending in the prompt!
“Ruby,” Sapphire stood up from her spot on the grass as shecalled out to her partner, a picture of serenity despite the impending about totake place there in a few hours. Though she was worried about their firstbattle against the diamond forces too, she needed to be the voice of reasononce again. “We’ve trained for this. I’ve seen…you’ve seen that the chances ofour defeat are almost nonexistent.”
“Butwhat if we do unfuse! What if we getseparated!! What if we…what if we getshattered…!!?” As Ruby paced back and forth, the grass under her feet beganto turn brown and crackle with each step as they were exposed to near-scorchingtemperatures. “I know it’s a small…little…tiny chance. …But it’s still a chance…!”
Asmall spark instantly lit up the ground beneath Ruby’s feet at that last word, but before the embers could spread and grow, Sapphire stretched her hand out toit calmly, and it was quickly enveloped in a block of ice. She’d been expectingthat outburst.
“…Eversince we first fused…we know there’s always some way things could go…well…differently.”Ruby rubbed at her arm sheepishly. There they were, trying to protect thisplanet together with Rose, and yet her emotions alone posed a danger to it. “Youwere so sure we were going to go down then. And then we fused…”
Sapphireraised a gloved hand to cover her mouth, to which Ruby immediately flailed herarms worriedly. “Of course I would never regret what happened back then! It wasthe best thing to happen to us, I mean…!!”
“Pfff…”Sapphire looked away, but there was no hiding the darker blue blush on herface. But a calmer expression returned soon enough. “I know what you mean, Ruby. But you know why I was wrong then, right?”
“Yeah,it’s because of—ah!” Ruby attempted to step forward, only for her to nearly fallover as her foot was caught on something. But just like before, Sapphire spedforward just in time to catch Ruby before she hit the ground. As Ruby lookeddown again, she saw that her foot had slipped on the thin sheet of ice thatSapphire formed.
Realizingthis is what Sapphire was laughing at, Ruby quickly righted herself, but herhands lingered where Sapphire caught them. Smiling for the first time sincethey had unfused due to worry, she squeezed Sapphire’s hands gently. “It’sbecause of love, right?”
Sapphirenodded and raised her hands to cup Ruby’s cheeks before leaning her foreheadagainst the other’s. Her smile grew that much more when she felt Ruby heat upagain. “And when we have a love like that on our side, what’s there to beafraid of?”
“Hmm…whenyou put it that way, it makes sense…” Ruby stepped back and put her hand to herchin in thought. “…But I was thinking more along the lines of…”
Rubycouldn’t quite see it, but she knew Sapphire’s eye lit up when the red gem suddenly turned and placed her hands on Sapphire’s waist before lifting her up in the air. She gavea brief gasp of surprise before it quickly devolved into laughter as Ruby beganto spin now that her mood finally evened out and her confidence swelled withher loved one in her arms. It wasn’t long before the two’s laughter eventuallymelded into one and there was simply a lone figure standing in the middle ofthe field resolutely, as if the battle had already been won.
“Howcan the diamond forces…anyone not beafraid of love?”
