"You're Over-Thinking Things"
Dear painting department at my school,
I am the artist, so in my work I call the shots.
No I will not start painting figurative work in order to lump myself in with traditional feminist artists.
No I will not strip my concepts from my work because they "color" your idea of how to read them. I will continue to write artist's statements that reflect what I'm thinking about, and if that influences your reading, whatever.
No I will not be anti-intellectual and just make abstractions about materiality and contemporary-ness. That's just a by-product of the time and place I live in.
Furthermore, I am not using "pussy colors", and the gashes in my work are not "vaginal gashes". Because I have a vagina DOES NOT MEAN I am painting about it. I am more important and complicated than the genitals between my legs.
Furthermore I find your sexism and your repression of my tendencies in painting to be fucking rude.
I refuse to fit into a comfortable, privileged paradigm of painting, where I make white, male, cisgender, heterosexual imagery. I will make what I want.
Last thing: because I am a feminist, you want me to be "angry" in my abstraction. I deserve to have some fluidity in my emotions within my work. I am not a cliche or a trope because I am a feminist/woman painter and I'm painting about gender and the nature of abstraction.
Also, despite this, I deserve contradictions in my work just as much as anyone else. I am not a perfect human being, and I don't deserve to be held to that standard because I am making some of the most conceptually dense work in the studio.
I will have my cake and I will eat it too, just like you.
Sincerely,
Corynne Ostermann
