Third-Partystravaganza 6: Grease Rat (Rogue Archetype; ICOSA Entertainment)
In steampunk worlds of magitech and machinery, often with the same social climate as Earth’s Victorian era, inevitably machines will outstrip professionally-trained engineers. As such, many operators and technicians away from government or wealthy employers will have to make due with experience in the field.
Whether saboteurs or lay engineers (or both), “Grease Rats” are such an example of how technical know-how can be developed and implemented far from schools and certificates. While they may not always have the right parts or the time or knowhow to implement new designs, there are few who would deny the ability of these impromptu operators to keep machinery running in the meantime.
These roguish engineers know the anatomy of machines better than they do that of living things, and can deal catastrophic damage to machines and constructs alike, though they have trouble doing the same to flesh.
They are also naturally masterful at repairing almost anything, including vehicles, or alternately, breaking them apart.
Even without proper tools they can make quick repairs, and can often get machines functioning again for a brief period of time with a quick fix, often just enough to make it back to safer environs where repairs can be made.
Over time, their ability to repair and jury rig only grows, allowing them to do twice the work in half the time.
Playing in ICOSA’s Pure Steam setting or any other steampunk environs? This archetype could be quite useful for playing a saboteur and the party’s engineer in one fell swoop. Keep in mind though that while they can certainly make use of a proper workshop, they work best in the field. Obviously, their biggest strength in combat is disabling enemy vehicles, machines, and construct allies, so keep that in mind for your build.
The classism that may or may not exist between the grease rat and more professional engineer classes and archetypes aside, this archetype does really fill a lot of niches, from the urban lay engineer in the working districts, to the rural tinkerer who has been the only one to touch the machines in in the region for years, and so on.
Though the ironclad ships prove too tough to destroy, they still do take regular damage from the foo otters that rage against technological incursions in their sacred river. As such, the company has taken to hiring more repairmen regardless of credentials, the consequences of which will be revealed in time.
Downstream at the bay, searing-hot metals from the refineries are cooled in the waters, making them uncomfortably hot or boiling, depending on the day, and certainly bereft of most life. Gillmen grease rats equipped with potions of fire resistance often have to make repairs on the submerged chain gear system, and many are lost due to poorly made potions running out in the scalding water.
Seeing all of these injustices and neglect, a saboteur has emerged. Calling herself The Shorn Knuckle, a daring ratfolk tinker has begun a campaign of sabotage to break down industry and force investigations into these neglectful conditions and work ethic. For their part, the companies would pay a high price to eliminate this upstart.

Pathfinder is a popular campaign setting for roleplaying fans and it’s no surprise that there are a number of indie spinoff titles using the rules for the Dungeons & Dragons alternative. While most Kickstarters that I’ve seen are either add-on books to the core Golarion setting or set in another fantasy realm, Pure Steam is one of the few to take it and create a subgenre of its own.
