hii :3 i saw a pin of yours on pinterest, about how you shade certain colors. it looks rly pretty. i wanted to know what brush you use to blend the colors like that, yk? im new to digital art so idk much stuff :'3
thanks for the compliment and thanks for asking! I'll give a run through for how I shade with yolk here.
so I start with my flat colors...
then I put all layers relating to the flat in a folder, alternatively you can merge it all down but I don't recommend it in case you wanna edit the base.
I make a layer on top and set clipping to on
I start with a bright color, what decides this usually is what just happens to look best for what I have.
For the shading itself, It's all with airbrushes! I like to have a lower opacity, bigger one (light), then a higher opacity, smaller one (bold)
erase around the parts which are lit until im left with something like this.
if my character has fur I like to use detail brushes to give it texture.
Then, I set protect Alpha to on. most "professional" digital art programs have this.
using other bright colors, I add hue to the shadows, color choice here solely relies on appeal, what I think looks best.
Then I erase around the edges, in the bits I think would look good, and I typically do highlights in solid color layers.
which leaves me with this!!
Shading itself highly relies on what you're drawing, but this is a good starter. I need to practice rendering myself. here's a short gallery of my favorite shaded pieces. I've only recently really settled into this method but I love it a lot.
EDIT: here's the image/pin they were referring to.
