Prompt 13 - On the Grounds
@wolfstarmicrofic November 13, word count 529
Previous part First part
Sirius clung to Remus’s back as they looked around the new room they’d run into. This one was enormous. It looked exactly like his parent's castle grounds. The same grounds they’d crossed to get into the forest. He wondered if perhaps the stairs had been their last trial, and now they’d be rewarded or whatever was at the end of all this hardship. But then he saw it. Way across the lawn on the willow tree was a door.
“It’s on the willow tree, Remus,” He sighed and gripped on tighter to Remus’s furry neck as he swung his head around to find the door.
Remus didn’t seem to mind him sitting on his back, so he made no effort to get off. Remus was so comfortable, and right now, they didn’t have to fight for their lives, and he welcomed the rest.
Remus lifted one massive paw from the stone steps and put it on the grounds, and Sirius cursed Dorcas and her damned fool’s quest as the willow’s branches suddenly came alive and began menacingly swinging at them.
There was no way to get to the door without battling the tree. Sirius contemplated just burning the damn thing to ashes, but then he’d burn the door as well, and then they’d be stuck. He looked around and as far as places to be stuck for eternity went, this wasn’t so bad, but then Remus would still be stuck in his Grim form in hell and Sirius couldn’t do that to him, so he jumped down off Remus’s back and charged.
The willow was ridiculously strong and incredibly fast. They didn’t stand a chance. Sirius was caught in the chest by one of the larger branches and launched halfway back to the castle. Remus didn’t fare much better. He was quicker at dodging the branches, but his large size meant he couldn’t get through to the trunk.
They tried again and again. Sirius lost count of how many times he flew through the air. But then Hagrid’s coat got caught on a spindly branch, and he was whipped through the air as the tree tried to free itself.
It eventually untangled itself from the ragged coat and Sirius slid across the ground beneath the murderous limbs and right up to the roots with his momentum. The benches tried to reach him, straining as far as they could, but he was in an awkward spot for them to get at him. The door lay behind him, and he could just walk through it if he wished, but he wouldn’t. Not without Remus.
Sirius looked around for anything that might help him get Remus through the tangle of whomping branches, and then he saw it. Etched into one of the roots above a little knot in the wood was written, ‘Push me’, and so he did, thinking what was the worst that could happen.
The branches froze, and the creaking tree fell silent. “Hurry, Remus,” He garbled around a mouth full of blood and dirt. “We don’t know how long it’ll stay still.” He turned around and opened the door, letting Remus and himself pass safely into the next room.
