I finished Puzzle Bots and the Shivah, in a row.

Excellent games, tho playing them in that order made me experience one hell of a mood whiplash. Puzzle bots is cute and fun, while the Shivah starts dark and gets even darker by the end.

I recommend both of them, but maybe not played in that order XD. Gotta play some other adventure games today!

10 minutes into Puzzle Bots and I’m already in love

Zander and Hero have a way with digging up the forgotten past

"I'm not gonna sew your tie onto your shirt!"

"Aw- buh- Please? It's how I've always had it done!"

"No, that's so tacky!" Two men stood in a tailor shop close to closing time. The man behind the counter had his brow furrowed, staring at the man across from him in disbelief. "Can't you go somewhere else to get that done?"

"Your tailor shop is the only place that's open this late that's close! Please, Mr. Mallone, I just need this done!" The customer was getting increasingly distressed as this went on. "I'm desperate here!"

"No. I'm not changing my mind about this. Why would you even need your tie sewn into your shirt?"

"I... Lose things easily and it's the only way to be sure I won't lose my ties!” He clasped his hands together, crumpling the shirt and tie in his hands as he did so. “Please!”

“Zander!”

“How many times do I have to tell you? No!”

“Pretty please?”

“Zandeeer!”

“No matter how ‘pretty’ your please is, I’m not doing it!” Mr. Mallone slammed a hand on the counter.

“But I really need this done, I don’t want to lose the tie! My girlfriend bought it for me!”

“Well that’s jake that your girl bought you a tie but I’m not going to ignore common fashion sense just for you!”

“Zander, down here!”

“I’ll pay double whatever you would ask!”

“Zander!!”

“I’m not going to do it, so double of nothing is still nothing,” Mallone tapped on the counter, “And what is saying Zander?”

“Huh?”

“Zander, down here!!”

Zander glanced down at his pant leg, “Oh! Hero!” He placed his shirt and tie on the counter and leaned down, “Did you hide in my bag again? You know you’re not supposed to do that.”

“I know, but look what I found!”

"What is that? A business card?" Zander stood up, a small yellow toy in one hand and a card in the other. "Rosangela Blackwell, Spiritual Consultan- Oh, woah! Can this glow in the dark? 'Cause that's pretty cool if it can!"

"Hey, give me that!" Mr. Mallone reached across the counter and grabbed it from him. "How did you find this?"

"It was stuck between the desk and the wall upstairs!" The yellow toy explained, "It looked like it had been there for a while!"

"For... Years..." Mr. Mallone got a far off look in his eyes.

"Do you know her?"

"Yeah I... I did." He leaned on the counter, "Eight years... And then... And then..." His eyes widened a bit.

"Brrr." Zander shivered, "Did anyone else feel that chill?"

After a time Mr. Mallone straightened up. "You know what, Kid," He set the card on the counter. "I will sew your tie on. But just this once, OK?"

Zander lit up, "Oh thank you, Mr. Mallone, Thank you so much!"

"Call me Joey." He looked at the yellow toy, "You found this, right?"

"Yeah!"

"Thanks so much, little guy."

Zander rubbed the back of his neck, a silly smile on his face. "That's my Hero! Always finding someway to help even if he doesn't know it!"

Hero mimicked the action, “It was nothing, really, I just fell off the desk and it was right there!”

Joey waved them off, “I’ll have your shirt done tomorrow. Get out and get some rest.”

“Thank you! Thank you so so much Mr. Maa- J- Joey.” Zander waved, turning quickly and exiting the shop, “Oh man, I can’t wait to tell Yuri about this.”

“The other bots are gonna be so jealous I had this adventure without them!”

Joey watched the inventor and his yellow robot disappear into the city, he glanced down at the business card. “You know, Red…He would make a pretty good Bestower… If he were all there.”

Puzzle Bots (2010)

Genre: Adventure Developer: Ivy Games Price: £3.49

Despite the misleading title, Puzzle Bots isn't a puzzle game but is instead a point and click adventure game in which you control a group of tiny robots who break out of their test environments to wander off and have adventures. Whilst you initially begin with two robots: Hero, who has the ability to pick things up and Ultrabot, who has the ability to push larger items around, the roster of controllable characters soon expands to a total of five, adding the flamethrower-equipped Kelvin, bomb-throwing Bombchelle and the mermaid-like Ibi who has the ability to tow things around under water. Each of the game's stages requires the player to switch between a combination of these characters, utilising and combining the available abilities in order to solve a series of short, locational puzzles in a variety of interesting settings.

But whilst the puzzle design is excellent, the rest of the package is considerably less so. Visually the game has a rather 'early 2000s webcomic' look to it, with a character style that appears to ape Ctrl-Alt-Del artist Tim Buckley's already rather poor graphical style. Much like that author's work the game's human-dominated main plot stars Zander, a clumsy, idiotic robotic engineer who, despite the fact that there is incredibly little to actually like about him as a character, has the cast's two women practically throwing themselves at him as if he was Brad Pitt. Everything involving this love triangle is written in a clichéd and ham-fisted way, with the shy Yuriko being beaten to the punch by new girl (or grrl, considering that she's a ridiculous punk stereotype decked in various shades of pink) Astrid. Meanwhile token black guy Theo and Comic Russian guy don't really have much use rather than as set dressing, and suspicious boss Dr. Hugo functions as a really obvious and uninteresting villain.

Whilst there are some genuinely funny jokes nestled between the pointless romantic subplot and awkward mystery plot, the game is full of  cringeworthy moments, horrible characterisation and at least one full-blown deus ex machina so bad that it made me want to drive my skull through the desk whilst I was playing. And whilst the puzzles are brilliantly designed and rather entertaining to play, players must also expect poor hand-drawn graphics (and even worse animation), and some absolutely awful voice acting to go with that. There's definitely some good features of Puzzle Bots, but it tries much too hard to be a situation comedy focusing on it's human cast and spends far too little time with the true stars of the piece, the robots themselves.
