Vauge thoughts about more serious blogging
So, I have a load of thoughts about parenting autistic children and ways to think about parenting autistic children (like accommodation based rather than therapy/normalisation based) and I’d like to get them together into a blog. Some of it’s me wanting to use my understanding of general developmental of
But, I think this would be much better done with someone who is a parent of an autistic child (autistic themselves or not). I have experience with half of this, but not with the other half, and I think there are things that will be more nuanced that I understand.
So this is a vauge request for anyone who is a parent of an autistic kid an interested in writing a series of effortposts aimed at parents of autistic kids in collaboration with an autistic adult who has a good scientific understanding of developmental psychology.
Proposed topics, in no particular order:
Don’t panic
Your child is weird AND totally fine
Throw out your developmental milestones
Sensitive periods and why they’re irrelevant
Accommodation parenting rather than therapy parenting
Normalisation vs skill learning
Teaching skills to your kid you’ve never needed yourself
“whoops I punished you for something you can’t control”
ABA: intro
ABA: shit to avoid like the plague
ABA: useful stuff you might want to try aka data keeping and figuring out why your child is crying
Does your kid even need a therapist?
Useful therapies for your kid (occupational, sensory integration, speech, talking)
Useful therapies for you (yes talk to a therapist omg)
How to tell if this is something you should be talking to your therapist about or your kid’s therapist
Wow that’s longer than I intended. Anyway, message me if you’re interested.
