it has been too long since she'd worked a cardio rotation. finally. finally. finally. is the chorus that chants inside her head when the word magically appears on her schedule like a divide scripture she had memorized in a sunday school and has hidden itself in the folds of her brain, dormant but never fully forgotten. never mind that the odds that she would hold a scalple let alone someone's heart were so low not even the most desperate gambler would take.

at least she'd have a chance to wedge her foot in the door. so she puts on a smile and enough make up to hide the shadows under her eyes and tries to play the part of a fresh faced newcomer. eager to learn from whoever is willing to teach her.

"Dr. Kent. I'm your intern today." With any luck, her resident missed her shouting match with the ER nurse last week. Not that Lottie's banking much on her own luck these days.

a bar after work

two drinks, one for each of them. lottie doesn’t even have to object before the server nods apologetically to two men at the end of the bar. copy, paste one direction turned tech bro complete with a patagonia vest and sunglasses tucked into the front zipper despite the sun having not dared to show its face in three days.

“ew” she says, but downs the drink anyway. “absolutely not breaking celibacy club rules for a guy who wants to tell me about his favorite productivity podcast.”

the sun is too bright in the morning. she thought part of the charm of the pacific north west would be the rainy cloudy days that could block out the morning light pouring through the window. she might as well still be in New Orleans, she thinks, groaning into the pillow over her face.

and to add insult to injury, her alarm is blaring on the other side of her goose down helmet. her third of the day. her had groped around on the floor for her phone, blindly tapping what she hopes is the off button. fine. FINE. you win, morning.

lottie tosses her pillow to the other side of the couch and hoists herself upright. her fingers rake the tangles out of her hair as she twists it into a bun and pulls a hair tie from her wrist to secure it. “please tell me there’s coffee and that i have time to shower,” she calls into the kitchen.
