There was something particularly striking about the girl that stood in front of her. She watched her as she stared at her, hazel eyes framed in a mask of brown curls, mouth hung open in quiet wonder. Celeste raised an eyebrow. It was an interesting look, like a child gazing up at someone several feet taller than her.
“Next round!” The announcer called over a loudspeaker. “Mayu Cupal versus Celeste Wilson.”
The name seemed familiar, but Celeste couldn’t place it. Her face did, too, but she didn’t know why. At the mention of their names, Mayu smiled.
“Usually when I face opponents, their smiles are a little more cocky... if they smile at all.” Celeste commented. “I hope you’re ready.”
“I’ve been really excited for this.” Mayu said quietly. “Celeste, do you remember me?”
“I-It’s okay if you don’t!” Mayu wrung her hands together. “We just met once, and it was a long time ago. I... I was in Floaroma. You asked me where the Pokemon Center was-- Oh my God, I sound like a stalker or something, I’m sorry--!”
“No, it’s okay.” Celeste smiled reassuringly. “In Floaroma? ... When I was battling gyms, before I beat the League. I think I remember you. Vaguely.”
“I saw you battle in Hearthome. I know it was probably just some random trainer you were battling, but... You, I dunno, inspired me. I didn’t think I was capable of much, especially training, but you said I could be a great trainer, and then you became a Champion, and I thought--” She shrugged. “I dunno, a Champion thought I could do it, so...”
“And you did, didn’t you?” Celeste said. “You’re here, after all. You got through prelims and you beat your first round. That’s not bad.”
Mayu didn’t say anything. She just smiled.
“Ready?” Celeste pulled out her first Pokemon.
