Archaeologists have discovered two residences near the Giza pyramids. The residences may have housed officials responsible for producing food for a paramilitary force.

Archaeologists have discovered two ancient homes near the Giza pyramids in Egypt.

I could have sworn I posted about this earlier, but perhaps not. If I have, and scrolled past it, my apologies. The houses seem to belong to overseers of some kind. Why would they be overseeing a paramilitary force, though? Mark Lehner doesn’t illuminate.

The Architect

Inspired by the death trap at the beginning of Xmen: Age of Apocalypse. The sheer decades of effort it would take.

Samira was not born a slave.

Rather the opposite really. Her family could trace their roots to Pharoah in less generations than she had fingers on one hand, and her grandfather had been the architect who designed the Great Pyramid for Khufu. She had grown up comfortable, well-fed and well-educated, alongside brothers and sisters and cousins and friends. She loved her family. She loved her life.

But then the False Gods came.

En Sabah Nur came, with his four horsemen, who called themselves after scourges. En Sabah Nur came, with his magic, his power, his followers.

And then all were slaves to their whims, or killed for their sport.

Samira was one of many who watched loved ones die.

Samira was one of many who watched loved ones be pressed into degrading positions.

Samira was one of many who learned to live in constant dread.

But when En Sabah Nur decided that he wanted a pyramid, and asked who was the best architect, they pointed him towards her grandfather.

He refused, so they killed Samira’s father.

He did not refuse again.

Pyramids take a long time to build. Khufu’s pyramid took nearly two decades.

It was for this reason that her grandfather, old and tired and heartbroken, let Samira aid him in drawing up the plans (his eyesight was not what it used to be either). He knew that he would likely be dead before it was completed, and she, his eldest grandchild and the one best-educated in architecture would most likely have to take over his task in overseeing the construction.

So Samira helped him draft the layout, careful to superficially keep as close to the requested design as possible, whilst silently adding a few ideas of her own.

Grandfather Hemiunu’s eyesight was failing him, but it nonetheless did not escape him what her plan was. When he saw it, he smiled for the first time in weeks.

It was not a happy expression.

“Together, we will build him the greatest of all tombs,” was all he said, cautious of listening ears. “People will remember our pyramid for generations.”

Samira grinned viciously in return.

Yes, together, they would build En Sabah Nur the greatest of all tombs.

And then they would bury him in it.
