He travelled for a while. On feet from the coast, walking long days. To an extent, it felt like the old days of the Deliverance, but he was still in the army, so it was nothing but the usual. With one difference - he was alone.
A few weeks after arriving at Aegir, he reached the mountains. There it stood: the Garreg Mach Monastery. Grandiose, tall, far above the plains of the realms around, overlooking them and their peoples. To the people of Fodlan it was holy, the symbol of their land and to some - of their very life. To him… it resembled Rigel Castle. The same tall towers and thick walls. Woven banners hanging from the top. Gorgeous yet menacing. Always ready and always on guard. Even too much so.
“Well, I’ve seen worse,” he only sighed.
The hike was less troublesome than he anticipated; the roads, though steep, were well-maintained. Soon enough, he stood at the gate, looking at the marketplace, conveniently set up right outside the monastery. The sight was new to him: back in his homeland, monks preferred seclusion, and even though they engaged in trade, they valued their peace and quiet. The Priory of Novis, the numerous shrines and temples - they all were far away from the cities and harbours. Here, it was the contrary: the vendors couldn’t have been set up without the permission from behind those walls. It was here that he truly realised: so many things would be different from then on.
He passed by the stalls, glancing around aimlessly, but as he was about to enter the Garreg Mach itself, the guard stationed by the gate held out his hand:
“Sir, this is a restricted access area! Please state your business in the Monastery!”
Not saying a word, Python pulled out a piece of parchment with a wax seal on it. The lion and the tree. The symbols of the continent once similar to Fodlan, once separated, once torn apart by varying beliefs. The symbols of his homeland. Valentia.
The guard didn’t take long to look through the document, and it was quite a long one. In a minute or two, he looked up and gave Python a nod:
“Ah, you must be the new faculty member I’ve been warned about. Welcome to the Monastery, sir! They’ve been awaiting your arrival.”
“Thanks. I’ll see you around then,” replied he with a faint smile and headed in.
