GALTx eNews: Third Quarter 2017 Wrap Up!
Every quarter tests us in new ways. Last quarter was no exception. In just one day, we welcomed 30 hounds displaced by the closure of the Mobile Greyhound Park(the Mobile 30)! Additionally, we took in 12 more hounds from the racing industry, three hounds surrendered by their owners, six from shelters, one stray from Oklahoma (Lyza) and one from another adoption group (Cat), for a total of 53 new hounds. While we appreciate our many new foster families helping us make this happen, foster homes continue to be one of our tightest resources. About 18 hounds, including ten of the Mobile 30, remain in boarding at a cost of over $10 a day. If you live in the DFW or Santa Fe areas, please consider fostering. Our adoption team helped find 43 hounds homes last quarter, including Tarzan, puppy Lisa, and Moonie. Currently, about 20 of our hounds are available for adoption, including puppies Bart and Maggie. About 28 hounds are in Training Camp and ten hounds remain onInjured Reserve recovering from health issues such as Ehrlichia Canis, heartworm and broken legs.
Our hearts broke as we watched Cactus succumb to illness within days of joining the GALT family. We are still trying to raise money to pay her nearly $10,000 in vet bills. If you can help, please click here. Although we were unable to help Cactus, Viola reminds us that we must give our best effort to every hound in need! Our little champ Viola recovered from her illnesses and injuries sufficiently to become available for adoption! Unsurprisingly, she is already "adoption pending."
In addition to managing the hounds, our amazing volunteers organized and coordinated key fundraisers such as the Racers 'n Referees Round of 18 Golf Tournament, North Texas Giving Day, our 12th Anniversary Cooking for the Hounds, and The Mad Hatter Gala! Of course, our volunteers also ferried adoptable hounds to multiple meet and greets nearly every weekend to help find them homes!
