got so wrapped up in qalis's personality that i forgot i wanted them to romance lae'zel and the approval isn't high enough for a scene at the party 😭🔫
QALIS (BALDUR'S GATE 3)
PRONOUNS: they/them
RACE: githyanki
AGE: 41
CLASS: warlock (the great old one)
BACKGROUND: soldier
LOVE INTEREST: astarion
BEST FRIENDS: lae'zel
THREE CONCEPTS: loneliness, rebellion, protecting children
SHORT BACKSTORY DESCRIPTION: to a young sixteen-year-old qalis, it seemed like they were the only one, who was genuinely horrified by the things that were happening at their crèche. an out from the gruelling nightmare presented itself in the form of a lucrative contract with a certain ancient entity. not quite fitting in anywhere, qalis got used to living on the margins of society, having a hard time building any long-lasting connections and often hearing nothing but the voice of an eldritch being whispering in their ear.
[PERUSE THEIR TAG]
MORE PICS UNDER THE CUT:
thinking about how qalis left their crèche when they were just 23 and almost two decades later they still don't really know how to organically make friends because they were raised in an environment where friendship was forbidden and then, in order to escape, had to enter an environment that is completely unaccepting of and unwelcoming to githyanki. just escaping abuse into nothingness. that's one of the reasons they bonded with astarion so quickly (despite reeeeally not agreeing with him on a lot of things), because they were very much going "thank gods my eldritch patron for these fucking tadpoles". and that's also why they were so eager to accept anyone and everyone into their merry band. hanging onto that opportunity for companionship like it's a lifeline. and it really is.
see, i don't really like having my ocs wear prominent characters' armour after killing them because it kinda breaks the immersion for me...
🔫*hismaia in orin's armour*
ok well there are always exceptions, besides it's dyed pink so it isn't as...
🔫🔫*qalis in gortash's full canonical outfit*
fine, sometimes you just need to put your oc in a prominent character's armour 😔
qalis and lae'zel's journey from reluctant allies to best friends makes me 🥹
qalis, who is understandably deeply traumatised by their experience at their crèche, slowly growing to trust and understand lae'zel, eventually risking their life by going to the house of hope to retrieve the orphic hammer and free orpheus. because lae'zel helped them understand that not everything is black & white, that their people are indeed their people and they deserve freedom, that helping them doesn't make qalis's experience and trauma invalid, that they are allowed to have complex feelings about them.
lae'zel, who is so deeply dedicated to their people and their cause, slowly growing to trust and understand qalis, and eventually agreeing to stay in faerûn because she freed orpheus and she has done more than enough. because qalis helped her understand that there is life beyond duty, that she deserves to find her own path, separate from it, that moving on doesn't make lae'zel selfish or a failure, that she is allowed to build a life with just herself in mind.
to be loved is to be changed, etc etc
