Keeping quails is a great way to enjoy a farming lifestyle in your own backyard! They are cute, easy to care for and come in a variety of beautiful colours and patterns. Quails are also prolific egg layers - the eggs are delicious, or you can hatch them out and breed your own quail family!
Keeping these quails is similar to keeping chicken, however they do not take up as much space as they are able to live permanently in a coop without free ranging, which means less mess! All you need to do is provide a safe, sheltered space with food, water and a bit of TLC.
Japanese quails enjoy warmer weather, and as naturally migratory birds, during the colder months they may like to move into cosier accommodation. During the summer months, quails are happiest outside, as long as they have access to a dry, shady and draught-free area. They love to scamper and hide in shrubs and nooks, and on hot days you can find them cooling off in a dirt bath.
During colder months, they like to be kept in a light, dry and ventilated space. Unless temperatures drop below -5˚c, heating is not necessary. A shed would make a perfect winter palace, and moving them can even help stimulate nesting. However, quails will happily live in one permanent location, as long as it is it safe and cosy all year round.
Of course, it is important that the quails are safe from their enemies such as cats and foxes, so make sure their coop is secure and predator proof.
