30 Day Novel Writing Challenge
4. Describe your inspiration and what message you wish to bring across.
I cast AEFAE before I started writing it, so my main inspiration was wanting to see Gary and Dianna play a father and daughter, coupled with wanting to see Gary play a damn normal person in a movie for once. I also have a weakness for strong father/daughter bonds, and for parents that will do anything to protect their children, so AEFAE sort of took shape around that. (Like, "I want to see Gary play Dianna's dad, but I also want him to be badass and fiercely protective, and I want to give Dianna a chance to be a badass too.")
I don't know that I have any sort of blanket message I'm trying to bring across. I think I wanted to show a heroine (Hannah) with all of the odds stacked against her, but refusing to give up without a fight, and to show that women can be strong and emotional at the same time, that a woman can cry because she's scared or in pain, but that doesn't make her weak.
I think I wanted to show with Juliet that love does not make a woman weaker or less important or less of a leader, that being in love with a man does not mean that she is afraid to tell that man when he's being an asshole, and when he needs to sit down and shut up.
(I won't go on about the men, because this is already too long, but they're important too, particularly Eli when it comes to his and Hannah's relationship post-kidnapping.)
And with including Hannah's recovery in what will eventually be the epublished version (and many thanks to Leah and Brittany for suggesting I add that), I feel like maybe it can give women who have been through trauma similar to Hannah's something to identify with, to show that it's not easy but that it can get better. I feel like you don't often get to see the aftermath of stories like this, and I think it'll be nice to actually show that.
I think basically I wanted to have a thriller that wasn't completely cliched, and I hope I did that.

one day well get into the same fandom or s/t again. i hope.
I'm sure. I mean, I have online friends that I've been friends with for 10 years, and our common fandoms have always changed, and sometimes we don't have any in common at all, but eventually things cycle back around again.

"falls asleep first: jess. she knows it makes natasha feel better if she does." tell me more :3
well for natasha, it's like for her partner--if they're asleep, she's safe, and they're safe. they're safe because she can make sure no one's coming in before she drifts off--who knows what might happen to them while she's not awake?????--and also it's just...she's not used to sleeping with other awake people in the room. might be threats, yknow?
