WWOOFING IN LA DRÔME
In June 2015, I worked on a farm in southern France for four weeks. It was an organic farm in the département La Drôme, not far from the French alps. I found the farm thanks to the organisation WWOOF, and you can read about my first experience with WWOOF here.
The farm was located outside of a village in a peaceful area close to the mountains, in the midst of forests, meadows and small streams. It was owned by a family who practiced the system of permaculture which is a way of farming that includes ecological ideas. They were growing vegetables (pumpkins, zucchinis, onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, ...) and fruit (cherry, apple, pear, strawberry, raspberry, ...) and had horses, cows and huge cornfields.
I spent my days watering the plants, planting seeds, looking after the horses and securing the fences. Usually I worked in the morning, the weekends I was free. I also helped with cooking and spent a lot of time with the family which helped me a lot improving my French skills. In my free time, I took the car to the swimming pool in the neighbor village, went on walks in the forest and took yoga lessons or participated in activities with the family.
After my first experience with WWOOF, which was quite horrible, I was extremely glad to be hosted by such a nice and welcoming family. Overall, I am very grateful for the opportunity to work there. It has taught me a lot about ecolocigal farming and living with nature.
