Quantum Device Rambling
The Quantum Device is one of the four Plot Devices given to the main characters of hOurS, along with the Portal Device, the Dangerous Device, and the Constraint Device, as a reward for completing their monument. The Quantum Device (QD from here on out) is used to send objects through time.
There are limitations on it's use. The device itself decides when and where an object will appear (the user cannot choose when to receive an object). The advantage to this is that the item will always appear when it is needed, and on it's own accord. That means that if it is used on a shield, for example, the shield will appear precisely when and where it is needed most. The doesn't mean that the shield will appear when the user would really like a shield, or when a shield will be useful.
It also activates primarily on it's own accord. The items it sends are seemingly random, and only are sent when the front end of the QD are pointed at the object, and when the object is within roughly 5 feet of the device. In any sense, the user would have to essentially point the device at everything they encounter if they want to be sure they have everything necessary.
There is also limitations on how far back or forward an object can go. 24 years, forward and backward. The user is given 7 uses outside this limitation, and so can send something much farther into the future, but of course this wouldn't be their choice, but the device's. Also worth noting is that items that are considered part of a set count as one use, so a chess board and its pieces would count as one item, even if it had 33 parts.
Other than these limitations, the device can be used (comparatively) freely throughout the story. There are no restrictions on the size of the thing (though there must be room for the object to depart the device), and once it is upgraded upon all players completing their monuments, the user can select what objects are sent with one button, and receive with the other.
