Have you played any good Free 2 Play games?
Me and my cousin were way in to Albatross 18/Pangya! back in the day, back when Free to Play was something limited exclusively to overseas games. I haven’t played it in years, but the last time I did, you could play golf however much you wanted for free; the only thing that cost money were like, power-ups to improve your shot accuracy. But you could ignore that stuff and just golf like a regular ol’ golf game if you wanted to.
Beyond that, I’m not a huge F2P guy, I guess. I’m in the closed alpha for a game called Quantum Rush, sort of a F2P Wipeout clone, but I’ve been too busy to play much of it. The last time I did, what was there was obviously super early. Like, so early some menu options didn’t even work. I don’t remember reading anything about an NDA but I still probably shouldn’t say any more than that.
Thumbing through Steam’s Free to Play section, I guess I’ve played…
No More Room in Hell: This is a Source Mod, but a fairly professional feeling one. Originally conceived back in 2005, it took something like 7 years to get released. This is kind of like Left 4 Dead, if Left 4 Dead was a slower, more simulation-oriented game. A single bite can infect you, and there is no cure.
Pinball Arcade: Steam considers this F2P, but I’m not so sure. Still, it’s one free pinball table (the rest cost money), and it’s the best pinball simulation around.
Haunted Memories: This appears to be the official Steam version of “Haunt: The Real Slender Game”, which I wrote about here. It is a Slender clone with an overblown, cinematic sense of style that isn’t scary in the slightest.
Spiral Knights: I played this just long enough to complete a Steam Christmas Quest a couple years ago. Didn’t seem terrible for a top-down loot based RPG.
Team Fortress 2: Too bloated, too much nonsense. I don’t need to keep a 20gb game I only play during Halloween installed.
F2P games I’ve heard things about:
Tactical Intervention is by the guy who invented Counter-Strike. It sounds like it is gaining some traction even though it’s apparently janky and sort of busted.
I have a lot of friends hooked on Marvel Heroes. Diablo-like.
Similarly, I’ve had a few friends rave about Warframe. It’s a cover-oriented, team-based third person shooter, I think?
I meant to try Vindictus, but never got around to installing it. It seemed like a modern Golden Axe. I know a couple friends really loved it.
Friends still lament the loss of City of Heroes. Champions Online is the only thing remotely similar, but apparently not nearly as fun.
