Maybe it’s just my feed but the only place I’m seeing anything about h5n1 is twitter. PAY ATTENTION TO IT!!! Prepare NOW! not when everyone starts to hear about it, not when everyone starts to care, not when the CDC finally admits it’s an issue (if they ever do). Prepare right now. While you have the chance. I am talking to everyone in my life about masks and precautions. I was hesitant about it before bc fear of confrontation but I’m cracking down now. I am going to stock up on essentials. My list right now is non-perishable foods, masks, bottled water, first aid kits, basic medications, and other essentials I can think of. I am going to be incredibly diligent about hygiene and selective about where I go in public. This is not me trying to fear monger. I would rather be paranoid and alive than dismissive and dead. This has high potential to be so so so serious. Please treat it as such.

Prepping

We live pretty much in the middle of nowhere by American standards (the nearest Dunkin Donuts and Walmart are an hour away). Our usual reserve of food is a few days worth of canned goods in case of a blizzard or ice storm, and we lose power. A bit different from quarantine provisions.

So today was our usual grocery shopping day anyway, and we planned to get extra food. I was a little anxious about what might be left on the shelves, but our little grocery store was fully stocked - they even still had toilet paper.

We got about two weeks worth of food we could store. Pasta and sauce, canned soup, a big jar of applesauce. Frozen chicken, frozen vegetables. We already had a bag of rice. I bought ingredients for a big soup to freeze in portions. Yes, we bought toilet paper, but only one package. Some cold and allergy meds.

We tried not to go overboard. We've got online places we can order from if it comes to that - Amazon, Schwanns. We want to be sensible, we're not panicking. This isn't Armageddon - we'll have water, and electricity. We don't like to go out anyway.

I am a little less anxious now that we've got food.

Sysco has been giving the restaurants in my area extra food ( whether to get rid of stuff that would go bad because of low demand, or to be nice, or both, I'm not sure).

So when we picked up our pizza the other day, the manager gave us a bag of red potatoes and oranges.

So I'm making crockpot chicken.

I washed the potatoes, cut them in half, and dropped them in the bottom of the crockpot.

I seasoned the chicken (use whatever you want but I kept it simple with seasoned salt and parsley) and plopped it on top.

Set on low for 8 hours.

I've been making more slow cooker meals than usual because I can set it up right after breakfast, then not have to worry about dinner while I'm working or helping my kid with home school.
