Actor Caitriona Balfe, star of the time travel TV drama Outlander, has been told she must be back filming in Scotland just hours after finishing her first marathon in London on Sunday. The former model told the Standard she is due on set in Glasgow at 5am next Monday for work on the fourth season of the show, in which she plays a Second World War nurse who is transported back to the Jacobite Risings of 1743.
The 38-year-old, who is raising money for the World Child Cancer charity, said: “I’m working all week then flying down to London on Saturday.
"I’ll try to do a yoga class to get stretched out before it starts, then after the race I’m flying straight back to Glasgow that evening as I’ve got to be on set at 5am.
“It’s going to be interesting. You never know how the film scheduling is going to work out and I couldn’t get that day off.
"Fortunately, it’s all interior scenes and I just have to sit around in a kitchen. I won’t have to get on a horse, which is what I was really worried about, or, thankfully, run.
“My co-star Sam Heughan has run a lot of marathons, he’s already done two this year in Stirling and Edinburgh, he’s like an Energiser bunny and he’s given me a lot of good advice.
"The rest of them look at me as if I’m mad because they know what I’m really like.”
Balfe said she is hoping to complete the 26.2 mile course in four-and-a-half to five hours. She was talked into doing it by her sportier sister who has completed a number of triathlons.
She said: “I asked her if she would run for the charity in lieu of me, but she put the guilt trip on me and convinced me I should do it with her.”
Balfe is one of dozens of celebrities raising thousands of pounds for their good causes by competing in the race, which starts on Blackheath and ends on The Mall.

What is your favorite kick-ass Caitriona moment?
Ohhh, love this question. Thanks for dropping by, Anon!
Other than the Outlander moment I mentioned here, I think just the fact that she dropped everything in her life to pursue a foreign, terrifying, judgmental, fast-paced modeling career and then built it basically from the ground up with no prior knowledge and made herself an international success is pretty damn kick-ass. I know when I was 19 or 20 I definitely wouldn’t have had the strength or courage to do even half the things she did.
And then to drop everything and essentially end that successful, lucrative career to pursue her real passion and with the tenacity, determination, and not a little stubbornness to stick with it through classes, rejection, and type-casting? That to me is why she’s a kick-ass Queen. Two incredibly successful and very different careers before she turned the age of 35? Aspirational.
I’d also say her “walking the walk,” so to say, by not only endorsing World Child Cancer, but traveling all the way to Ghana to see firsthand the patients herself was a giant kick-ass moment. WCC’s CEO Jon Rosser did a great blog piece about her visit there. This was far from a vacation, and definitely far more than just a photo-op. Caitriona saw some very harsh realities in a country that is not exactly within most people’s comfort zones. To go there in person and bring the difficult truth to light of what these patients are going through is one of the most kick-ass things anyone could do.
And just because I really do love this ask and would love to hear other people’s choices as well, I’mma tag @lulu-tan79 @fuckyeahclairebeauchamp @caitbalfes @youmissher-terribly (and anyone else who would care to share!)
It’s such a cool thing to be a part of and it’s so rare. There’s so many shows and there’s so many incredible actresses who do such incredible work and it’s hard to feel like there should be any kind of picking out of performances here or there, but it’s just such a nice thing to get recognized. And it’s a testament to the writing. I especially last year had some incredible episodes and I think when you’re given material that you can really sink your teeth into, then it’s such a joy as an actor and I think as the whole cast and our crew. None of these performances happen on their own, you’re only ever as good as the person in the scenes with you, so when any of us get recognition like that, it’s just really nice for all of us because we work bloody hard and it’s nice to get invited to a nice party. Those things are really lovely. But at the same point, this job is just bloody brilliant anyway so I kinda feel like I’m o n e o f t h e l u c k y o n e s .
