The Queen Mother had her eye on Marlborough House, but Queen Mary (Elizabeth’s grandmother) was still alive and living there. By the time she died in 1953, Clarence House was ready for the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret who then lived there together, not always in total harmony, until Margaret married in 1960. The Queen Mother loved to entertain. She plucked the great and the good from various areas of public life and gave lunch and dinner parties for them. Many tales emerged from her table.
