Today We Celebrate #QueenKaren #Crownup 👑 ❤ ✊ Karen Seneferu is one of the most thought provoking visual artists of our time. Born and raised in Oakland California, her childhood was fed by revolutionary politics and the Black Panther Party’s free breakfast program. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of California at Berkeley and has dedicated her life to working as an educator and artivist. Self taught in her artistry, Senefuru is obsessed with gathering information, imagery and ideas. As a result, her work contains a completeness that belies her brief tenure as a multimedia artist. Using natural and manufactured materials she boldly examines the ancient and contemporary Nkisi, turning modern objects into artifacts called Technokisi. Art Project: The Black Woman is God (BWIG) is a multi-media visual and spiritual exhibition for audiences to recognize an alternative Western cultural narrative that challenges eurocentric notions of God through an examination of cosmology, womanhood/feminism, politics and psychology. The brian child of artist Karen Seneferu and curator Melorra Green, the project was first birthed as a black radical response to “new” scientific findings in anthropological genetics. Specifically, that the human race, through our mitrochondrial DNA, is linked to one African woman over 150,000 years old. However, as scholar Francis Cress Wesling writes “The most disastrous aspect of colonization [and] ... the most reluctant [idea] to release...is [the] colonization of the image of God.” Grappling with these two complexities, curators Seneferu and Green sought to examine why if the black woman is the mother of all humanity. She is among the most mistreated, demoralized, and devalued people in the world. First curated at the African American Arts and Cultural Complex in 2013, over 25 multi-media and musical artists presented works directly challenging mainstream constructions of the black feminine. "Space dictates meaning. What enters that space is dictated to by the meaning of the space or can change the meaning of the space."
