Now, I don't hate Eva Stratt (adore her, in fact), and I don't think Ryland Grace does either, even if their relationship could never be what it was before. Rocky, on the other hand—

Thinking about Rocky possibly being considered genius levels of smart even for Eridians. This incredible engineer comes back home and suddenly all his remarkable talent is being spent making accommodations (some vital, some frivolous) for his alien...friend???? Pet???

And people can't even complain about him "wasting his potential" or anything because he already went on a half-century mission that saved the entire fucking planet like. Literally what else could you ask for

He could probably revolutionize their next generation of space vessels but he's too busy building animatronics of his top ten favorite Earth animals his human showed him videos of

My vision of transfem Grace Projecthailmary is that she drops her former given name entirely and just starts going by "Grace" full-stop. It's a name that still links to her past experiences as a teacher and scientist, and also the name her best friend in the universe knows her by!

Transfem Grace who never comes out on Earth because she can never interrogate herself fully enough to reach a conclusion that would upheave her life to that degree.

Transfem Grace who 'not yet's herself all the way to space and wakes up not knowing what to call herself when the familiar words feel wrong and the unfamiliar ones are still scary, and was her past self in denial or just hiding??

Transfem Grace who is too stripped down to bury herself again, but also hurts to much to look directly while mourning the loss of every future she could have chosen.

Transfem Grace who meets someone who cares enough to gift her a way back home, who now has the motivation to start REALLY reconsidering how she could take advantage of a new lease on life.

Transfem Grace who once again believes she's going to die in space, but this time decides to wring as much joy as possible out of the remaining years with her best friend and indulges in practicing womanhood to her heart's content.

Transfem Grace who does NOT die in space, but gets to make a new home with her soulmate at her side. Grace who is surrounded by people who accept her exactly as she presents herself. Grace who is loved and celebrated for the rest of her life

I think the people online talking about Harry Potter boycotts with by sneering at reading a "mediocre children's book" or going after plot holes or inconsistencies with minor world-building details have honestly lost the plot about WHY we should be boycotting the franchise

It's worth noting that trans woman Grace is still a scientist before anything else. She's still holding onto more resentment about that failed paper than she ever felt about her gender. I think her awareness of her gender is on a low-level simmer for most of her life, something she glances at the shape of, thinks "that seems like A Lot right now," and then lets herself get pulled away from by other priorities. Namely, science! Even when she grows into teaching later in life, science is still her first love and the first thing she associates with herself.

Her expulsion from academia IS a significant, if indirect, factor in her remaining closeted well into adulthood, though. She internalized her published work and personally identified with it to the degree that she STILL holds a grudge even years after settling into another fulfilling career, and points to her stance as the reason for being fired, not her unprofessional behavior in defending it. She cannot separate her ego from her work, took criticism of it as criticism of her personally, and responded accordingly.

Suddenly she's jobless and a pariah to her former peers, and it still feels personal. To her view, even if not on a totally conscious level, SHE was what was unwanted, and when defending this part of herself had such negative consequences, opening the closet to a whole new layer of social stigma becomes a whole lot less appealing.

Re-listened to TAZ Balance recently and I’m still in awe that Griffin McElroy somehow managed to introduce a “long-lost twin of protagonist who had selective amnesia about them” character so late in the story, so successfully that she not only featured in some of the most thrilling and emotional moments of the series, but immediately became wildly popular and caused most of the fanbase to spontaneously develop crushes on her
