He... actually hadn't thought about that. Honestly, he'd kinda just been messing around, making the things just because he could.

"That... is a really good idea. I should write that down."

"I mean, the jets aren't strong enough for sustained flight, but I could set them up to do a quick burst at full power to give me a little boost, or dodge out of the way."

Come to think of it, that boost idea would pair very nicely with another project he was working on.

But he should probably focus on his current project for the time being.

"Anyway, you haven't even seen the coolest part!"

He turned over the shoe and pointed to an odd stripe lining the bottom between the jets. It was a sorta orange plastic, but there was an odd texture to it, almost like the side of a match box.

Which was an apt comparison, because-

"This is what I like to call a friction generator. It takes any amount of friction and converts it into energy!"

He swiped his finger across the stripe, causing it to briefly light up in a trail following his movements.

"Of course, it depends on the amount of friction going in, and the rate of conversion isn't one-to-one."

"The only downside is I haven't figured out a way to properly store the energy yet. It's rather unstable, so I can't just slap it into a battery. Buuuut it can give the jets an extra boost if I need it... once I figure how a decent portable power source-"

Currently, he was powering the things with a couple of D batteries. Which was fine for testing, but once he actually put it on? Those things would drain in seconds.

What's in his tone is nerves, not disgust. Why would she choose him, out of everyone else? Surely Akira had the more moldable personality, or Ryuji would be able to scare off any insistent offenders without much effort.

Fuuka opened her eyes and looked at Makoto with disapproving eyes. “I don’t even want to know how you have experience with this. ...I mean, I do want to know, but please save it for another time.” She admitted, playing with the ends of her braid. “Niijima-san, why couldn’t this wait until the morning? You could easily have called them up and explain the situation.”

“And here we see the human being feeding.” Ren said in his documentary voice as his camera clicked, snapping a few pictures of Makoto. “Contrary to popular believe, they are unaware of the whipped cream goatee for up to eight hours.”

‘It had been two weeks since the public had been exposed to this rather strange turn of events. Something that could only be described as a movie or even video game scene was now a reality. The dead woke up and began feasting on the flesh, any direct contact with one’s teeth or nails resulted in a fever and a slow burning death before one reawakens as one of them. Akira was just enjoying a nice day out with Makoto, within a beef bowl shop as they saw the madness unfolded outside, for the most part everyone (15 people) were brought into the back room thanks to the quick thinking of the cashier, the bad news was the undead had made it inside of the shop, glass were broken and the door that led towards the exit was blocked by a herd of these things. Escaping through the emergency exit would have been easy, however it was padlocked from the outside meaning they were trapped within the storage room if they do not get any outside help. The employee did express that they could locate the key right below the cash register outside with those things. However, no one was brave enough to volunteer to go out there and really who could blame them. “Okay it’s settled, I’ll have to go out there and get us that key.” Said Akira towards Makoto rather softly. “I know this isn’t the metaverse…but I think I can make it out there.”

All in all, she shouldn't have been surprised to come across Miss Makoto Niijima in a bookstore. From what Haru had told her, her friend was the studious sort and preferred to stay on top of her studies. If only the Ultimate Princess's excuse was quite so academic: she'd crossed paths with Makoto while her basket was full of manga and novels, mostly of the gothic romance variety. It was her way of engaging in a pleasant diversion from both her work and her studies, but she hadn't been as forthcoming with the other girl regarding her less-than-royal interests. But there was little she could do once they'd reached the queue for the registers: not with the bright, illustrated covers of her comics or the dark and beautiful covers of her novels. The only thing that made it, perhaps, a bit more awkward?

It was that there was no viable method of parting ways and hoping she'd forget about Sonia's haul of leisure reading: while they'd been inside, the skies had turned a sickly shade of grey/blue/orange and had opened up, rain pouring into the Tokyo streets as lightning flashed over the city skyline that afternoon. Sonia huddled beside her under the awning of the shop like the other dozen patrons wary of getting their new purchases soaked by the thunderstorm.

"I think it will be a very wet adventure indeed if you wish to try and make a dash for the trains!" Sonia half-called, half-shouted over the pounding rain to the other girl. True, she could call a car if she needed but that was a level of affluence she wasn't keen on showing off to both Makoto and a crowd of people. As a foreigner she already attracted attention: a private car with bulletproof glass would only be a further object of fascination. Even if the seats were heated and there were bottles of mineral water and sodas at the ready.

"Perhaps we should try to wait it out somewhere?" She suggested, "Maybe a snack or an early dinner? I'm not sure how far home is for you but my school dorms are quite a ways away! And it's best to enjoy a wonderful thunderstorm in the company of friends!"

While she too worried for her books, Sonia was otherwise enthralled. She smiled, eager and relaxed all the same, with each crack of lightning and rumbling thunder that passed over the city. Storms were violent, unpredictable, and most importantly, entertaining, from the aforementioned lightning to the soothing, even showers of a heavy rain.
