Can I be real for a moment? Maybe I am being selfish, delusional, dumb...but I don't want Dennis to have a girlfriend...or a romantic/sexual relationship with a woman? So, tomorrow is the S2 premier of the Pitt (aaaaa!!) and I have so many questions I want answered YESTERDAY lol.

I’m so curious who Dennis’ “inappropriate relationship” is. Now, I heard about this before Garsantos was confirmed canon, but I’m wondering if it’s just that. That he’s roommates with a fellow doctor/coworker? At first I was like, oh maybe he and Trinity get up to something (not personally a fan, I’m so behind the adopted-sibling arch for them) but then I saw the interview with Gerran and Isa about seeing the “haircut memes” pertaining to their characters and they both seemed behind the queer take for their characters so now maybe I’m back to thinking maybe it is a relationship with someone else. I swear I just need Dennis to be gay (I’m a hucklerobby Stan and I’d love for that to happen, but who actually knows) I just really don’t want Dennis to be with nurse Kim and I’d just be sad if that happened lmao. Is it the new med student, James I think? I know he’s “following” Dennis around buuuuut Dennis is teaching him, soooo?? I mean cmon, between the shots on Dennis and Robby STARING at each other in that promo pic, Dennis sitting at Robby’s desk with his green jacket, the crumbs??? We are following them 👀

Queer Dennis! season 1

Here's a list of gay shit Dennis did throughout season 1. Feel free to add any I've missed.

1.1 in its entirety. He gets hit on by multiple gay men, revels in the attention and money. Never stops Terrell or any other man hitting on him. Never disputes being gay when Dee says, "You're not gay, just really really vain." He canonically has a gay (m/m/m) threesome with 2 strangers after he blacked out, with no help from Dee's acting classmates.

1.2 Dennis really embodies the hedonistic bisexual trope. He "has no convictions" when going to whichever pro choice or pro life rally will get him laid. When all the women he hits on turn out to be lesbians, he goes to the pro life rally and becomes a literal fence sitter. Can't pick a side is bisexual stereotype summed up in 4 words. The episode directly after his "experiment" he's assumed to be Charlie's boyfriend twice. Once with the mom of the kid Charlie thinks is his, and again with a stranger at the clinic.

He gets called effeminate three times in season 1. "pretty boy" by Dee in 1.1 and the clinic woman in 1.2, and "Mary of the ball" by Mac in 1.1.

1.3 is the weirder episode where the gang hosts underage kids and gets involved with high schoolers. The theme of not having a fulfilling or good high school experience because you were bullied and/or closeted and missing those childhood experiences is a common queer experience. The desire to have an experience and popularity that you didn't get as a teen.

In 1.4, he criticizes Mac for being attracted to and dating Carmen, then immediately after Mac tells him he's "putting in his time" waiting for Carmen to have bottom surgery he sleeps with the 1 off-limits woman. The Waitress. To me, this feels very, over emotional/jealous sex. Especially since he doesn't care about the Waitress.

That being said, he views sex as something to beat other men at, not something to do with a partner. Happens more in later seasons, but in season 1 it's the Waitress in 1.4, and the granddaughter he competes with Mac to sleep with in 1.6

I started reading "the way we look to us all" bc of your post and I'm going to scream, I'm like two-thirds of the way through and I am going insane why is it so good... I have so many thoughts about it so far

Oh man, sorry for the late reply but your ask actually prompted me to go read  "the way we look to us all" again because I was half delirious from the lack of sleep the last time.

I actually headcanon Dennis as bi, but the way that the fic deals with Dennis being newsflash asshole, gay the whole time is really a work of art. We jump right into his brain and it’s just smooth sailing from there, on his stream of consciousness, touching on every single issue you can think of as a viewer and adressing it without really adressing it in the true Sunny way. And the whole thing with Frank and Dee at the end nearly murdered me, it was just so painful and so fucking Dennis, you know?

I was also a huge fan of the contrast between the fic and the actual Sunny episodes being all talk but no exposition, not going too deep into the minds of its characters. They show you the clues and you’re supposed to figure out what they’re feeling or what motivates them. Their inner lives are painted in the background while you follow them around on some mundane and/or crazy ass scheme. In this fic it’s the polar opposite, you mostly spend your reading time inside Dennis’s mind with only a couple of glimpses into what’s happening in the ‘real world’, the dialoge has a dreamlike, muffled quality to it, a very unique POV.
