Elementary could definitly done better when it came to LGBTQ reprsentation among the main cast, that is no question. But on the other hand this show is also not agressively straight.
And sometimes I just want a show like Elementary where Sherlock runs around in an Elsa (Frozen) dress (even when it is just off screen), goes on a pride parade, openly admits Bella would have been better off if she dated Edward and Jacob, encourages Joan to date multiple people, or a woman. Stands up against homophibic assholes etc.
Sometimes those little things is what makes shows so special
Have I allready said how much I love Elementary? Things like that scene above are not special or groundbreaking, they don’t even have to, they are just human and down to earth and most shows to not archieve even that. I am sick and tierd of shows who completly ignore LGBTQ topics (Scorpion) and I love shows with well written LGBTQ reprsentation who are loud and proud and feature amazing queer love storys. But sometimes I just want a show like Elementary, who treats LGBTQ like everything else, just as something ordinary, something that does not need special treatment or celebration, that just needs one thing: The same respect as everything and everyone else. The same treatment.
For some this might be a very small thing, and i understand that but many shows I watch do not even achieve that. And sometimes if you have enough of those little things they eventually become a big important thing which can be truely special for you. Without being an amazing queer love story or poc representation.
THIS! A thousand timed this. A few years ago i would have given everything to hear something like this in BBC Sherlock. Yeah, Elementary might not feature openly queer characters in the main roles but it often features Sherlock who talks about self acceptance. Saying that Joan should not stick to traditional relationship concepts but haev the courage to explore new fields. He often points out that she would be much more happier with multiple partners at once, or with a woman.

Can you believe that one day we actually might have an openly gay Sherlock and a struggeling bi Watson and Sherlock gives that speech? The power it would have! It alleeady has power now in Elementary but in such a context! Just wow!

I really like how Elementary is handling gay jokes. In most of the TV shows that do not include major LGBTQ characters gay jokes are mostly made by men who try to de-masculate other men. In Elementary gay jokes are only dropped when it is a possibilty to the whole case. And never in the “ha! Gay!” way but more like in a “could be. I am not sure... are you doing gay stuff?” I guess it is also here for the straight dudebros who are watching the show with a tiny homophobic mind, going: Ha ha, he assumed he is gay.” But actually i do not belive that is the main goal because the “jokes” are never disrespectful towards gay people. Sure this show really could have major gay characters but all in all they are doing much better then most crime shows i know. This show doesn’t act like LGBTQ people doesn’t exist and pretend that you can live in New York for multiple years without running into, at least, one gay pride and multiple LGBTQ and disabled people
