Van! Curious about any thoughts on Bring it On.
You want to hear about ‘Bring it On’? Oh I have all day for that. Beverly, cancel my 2 o’clock! *there is no one else in the store*
First thing’s first, you call me Big Red, I’m charging you triple.
I consider this a dyke classic. Because any, and I mean any, straight woman that loves this movie is attracted to someone in the cast. Jesse Bradford is not enough of a draw by himself.
But anyways, everyone that loves Bring It On latched onto it for one of 3 performances, Kirsten, Eliza, and, my personal favorite, Gabrielle.
Let me get into those performances.
- First, our lead, Torrance. Kirsten Dunst gets her own section of the shelf for a reason. Total icon.
This movie reminds me of some chick I had a major crush on back in Keyport. Blonde. Legs for days. Laugh like a babbling brook and alla that. Goalie. Wow. Anyways met her at goalie camp in ‘92 and we hit it off.
Trained together, she asked about my team. Talked strategy. Boom. We face off against Keyport later that season and guess what happened?
They knew our whole JV defense strategy! The loose lips of my fancy traded for intel like I was but a fool in a Spy Film.
Where was I going with this?
Anyways. I realized that I was the cause for that so I fessed up to coach and we had to evolve our plan.
Torrance and her work ethic and accountability puts this in the pinnacle of sports films. But because she’s a feminine blonde cheerleader, not taken seriously.
- So yeah. Next. Eliza Dushku. Queen of fighting the good fight to make every tragically straight character she plays a bit more dykey. Total babe. She reminds me of my old friend Nat in this…
- Third, and the most important, Isis. I don’t think you realize how much of an impact that scene of her in the gym made an on young gay hearts everywhere.
Smart, sharp witted, a thirst for victory, beautiful, fierce, she is simply incredible. She conveys all of that in such little screen time. Purely incredible.
She also made me confront a really elusive truth about myself:
I have a ‘thing’ for women in cheer uniforms.
