Queer Shopping in Gender Town
I stopped wearing female underpants 10 odd years ago. Originally, the reason was that I’d just discovered sex. But I’m now in my 30s and sex doesn’t pull for a reason exactly the same as it used to.
I realised really recently (because of a dream, haha, thanks subconscious!) that the idea of male underpants didn’t bother me. In fact, I really wanted to try it on for size (later I might discuss how people actually get to know their sizes for underwear when it’s been 10 years and the last time you bought some was the other gendered garment... but maybe that’s best left alone, since you can’t return it anyway)
The decision was easy to make. I was going to go to a Kmart or Target the next time I was in a shopping centre and buy myself some boy shorts. I’ve seen my partners do it before; I know that’s where they’re sold. But then I was in Knox, and I’d never been to the Knox Target before, so I wasn’t sure of the layout.
Cue me going up to the nice store lady out the front: Uhh, hi.... this is going to sound like a strange question (me: obviously cis woman) but where are the male briefs shelved?
I thought that was the difficult part out of the way, but then she asked whether I meant men or boys (cause I apparently look like mum material, or that’s just the most likely reason a cis woman goes about buying men’s briefs).
Cue me suddenly starting to act like I’m a mum: Uh, thanks!
...... WHAT??!! I am a fairly brazen and unembarrassable sort of person, once you get around the sex is awkward to talk about and I feel uncomfortable being naked around most people. ....Okay, so now I think about it, I can kind of see why this was so surprisingly uncomfortable for me. But Still!!
In my head, I guess I wanted to be that girl who stood up to the nice store lady, who hadn’t asked for anything, and said, “Look here, lady, I’m a cis gendered woman and I want me some men’s briefs to wear MYSELF. You got a problem with that?”
Instead, I was this wilting cis person who was suddenly wishing I had brought a male friend or partner with me so as to have an externally understood reason for shopping this way.
I was more embarrassed by that than anything else. I hadn’t realised how used to ‘passing’ I had become... It’s not exactly like I have ‘POLYAMOROUS’ stamped on my forehead.
Then, then, there was the packaging. Wow, I thought that women’s underwear had it all with the boobs on the packaging, but I’d never actually looked at male brief packaging, and suddenly all I’m doing is looking at a whole lot of dicks. I’m TRYING to look at prices and sizes and colours, but, seriously, DICKS.
So, in the end, I’m just like, screw these dicks, and bought a brand simply because it were a couple that had dots on them and, more importantly, no strange person’s dicks.
