In Catholic, Anglo-Catholic and Lutheran traditions, there are books of liturgy, which help in the preparation of worship services. Many people serve as lay and ordained worship leaders in faith traditions that do not have prayer books. Sometimes, the process of writing liturgy flows, quickly, effortlessly. Other weeks, the liturgy is painfully challenging. Queering Lent is a book that has a poem for liturgy for each day of Lent (not including Sundays) and for Easter. The book also has a short Easter reflection.
There are very few religious books that I find breathtaking; Queering Lent is one of those books. Slats’ powerful poems range from insightful, to moving. For those preparing Lent services, Queering Lent is a resource that can help people find creative ways to express moving themes in Lent. People working in a multi-faith setting may find that the 42 poems will help explain some of the meanings that Christians and non-Christians can find in Lent.
