Facebook says their fake name button is in place to curtail and report abuse. However, this feature is being abused to target already marginalized individuals (trans, youth, queer, indigenous people, abuse and rape survivors, etc.), who, for a myriad of reasons, (most of which are protection and safety–nevermind privacy), have self-identified.
Removing this “fake name” button would be a super easy programming fix with no loss to safety, as there are numerous additional ways to report shady behavior on FB.
People speak to protecting our children, but what about our queer and trans children who are targeted, exposed and bullied by this egregious policy? #QueerKidsMatter
The fact of the matter is that it’s a Corporate, Big Brother, Frat Boy sausage fest at Facebook, where they are hell-bent on mining our personal information for their profit/advertisers.
