I have a Mega Man AU where Roll was the prototype to the robot masters instead of Blues

and I remembered there was a similar sort of swap scenario in an episode of season two of recut where Rock and Proto swapped roles temporarily

So I thought I'd ask, what do you think would be different if Proto had swapped roles with Roll instead of Rock? I, for one, imagine proto just punching the robot masters instead of having the arm gadget that roll has.

So for Recut, like if Roll was the older sister who became Wily's second-in-command, and Rock and Proto were twins? Lots of thoughts on this (this would be really fun to draw too~ like one of those style swaps I did awhile back, with Red Bomber Roll and Jumpsuit/Utility Arm Proto or whatever)

So Roll is still Roll, but like even cooler? So more of a 'cool badass' with the effortless charisma canon!Proto has, rather than a 'hotheaded badass' that canon!Roll is, yet also with a personal beef against Dr. Light that caused the original rift for her to defect (Maybe she too got bored?)

Meanwhile the sibling rivalry would be much more intense between Rock and Proto, with Proto especially feeling like he's been passed over. Not sure if this would make Proto more tempted to join his older sister, or if like canon!Roll he just blindly hates Wily and his second-in-command too much to ever consider this lol. But I think things would be very bitter between him and Rock at times

As for Proto's weapon, idk all the Light siblings are inventors like their father to an extent; Proto definitely likes hand-to-hand combat so punching definitely makes sense, I could still see him maybe making his own blaster like Roll did too, or maybe he does his own thing where he specializes in combat vehicles (like mini fighter jets, or a skycycle equipped with laser canons!)

Since Roll is the older sister, she'd definitely try to coax her younger brothers to join Wily, but also strive to get them to get along with each other (which they'd probably hate lol, though would also grudgingly think she is pretty cool for a bad guy)

So basically the sibling drama would still mostly be between Rock and Proto hahaha

But the real question is...would Roll have the scarf, or would that still be Proto's thing? Hmmm

I just realized - the curator turned Roll into an earring, and one of her first acts of independence was piercing her ears. Was that intentional?

Yes! Though admittedly, I was also kinda out of ideas lol (or had too many? idk drafting is weird)—I never really got beyond the ‘place holder’ jewelry types for Mega Man and Roll (more on that later if I do compiled list with notes?) But hey, at least these were easy to draw!

I was rereading season 1, which has been very fun, lots of details that stand out more with more context, but there's this one bit with Proto man that shows up more than once that's interesting.

In the first episode, Proto man tells Mega man that "Doc never got around to naming [him]... Too busy with his other inventions." Which is followed up a little during the Mega Pinocchio episode, with Proto man saying he's always been Proto (although not actually saying Dr. Light named him that, which turns out to be true), and when Mega man comments on that sounding a little cold, comments that Dr. Light is "Oblivious to details... I like Proto. It's better than Paaasd or something" (which lol)

Now that I've read the season 0 episode, it caught my eye that the name thing doesn't really get talked about there! Proto names himself very quickly, with no thought or fanfare behind it. Very fitting, but paired with the season 1 lines, I'm trying to puzzle out the incongruity of it (Proto you lying bastard why can't you be easier to understand!!!)

On one hand, if the subtle but present implication that Proto might feel bitter about his name is a retcon, it's one that I wouldn't have spotted if I hadn't reread season 0 recently. It's also just as likely that I'm reading into a set of lines that were just meant to be snarky, he definitely does that a lot too lol.

But I am curious if there's some level of truth to that sort of bitter undertone that I thought was implied! Proto man is a difficult character to understand, especially in season 1, and in general when trying to understand his feelings towards Dr. Light. Their relationship is so interesting to me, so sorry if I really did just read way too deep into it haha!

There was a slight perhaps retcon! (sorry this took awhile, limited internet access atm, also this is long/rambly lol)

I wrote season 0 waaay after season 1 (between Master of Disaster Part 2 and 3 to be exact) and in original s0 drafts, the naming thing didn’t happen as early, but when I finally began editing it that seemed unnecessarily weird/creepy for Dr. Light. So, instead the name thing came up on Proto’s activation day. Some of the emphasis around Proto’s name in S1 (particularly E1) was for dramatic irony.

So for character analysis:

Outside of that, still same deal with Dr. Light/Proto, just more focused on char divisions over specific, resolvable drama. The whole dynamic between Dr. Light and Proto has always been strained at best to total estrangement at its core, and sometimes painful to write. Dr. Light was never really in the wrong, Proto just developed into his own person that wanted nothing to do with ‘domestic human life’ or to have any type of authority figure. Its a huge philosophical difference, but its also a son who feels smothered and hopeless rejecting his loving father who tried his best to understand but could never make it work in time. That dynamic still exists, unsolved, in the good!Proto AUs (Master of Disaster Part 3, Become the Night)

Still, Proto isn’t really bitter by Dr. Light’s actions per se, he was just bitter about living under his roof where he was bored and under stimulated. Even Mega was surprised by this at first. In Mega-Pinocchio he was expecting a specific drama lead to Proto’s defection then was surprised when Proto also denied that Dr. Light really did anything wrong, and even reassured the naming thing didn’t bother him (I had already written the ‘naming’ scene in season 0, which remained unchanged, just happened earlier) It wasn’t until Future Shock when he began understanding Proto a little.

Either way tho, Proto wasn’t really bitter about his name (at least there was never intended bitter subtext there, but can be interpreted however!) I think in a way even if Dr. Light *had* given him a name (like Blues?) he would have been quick to drop that when he became Proto Man (kinda like how he thinks ‘Break Man’ is cringy in Become the Night or how Elec Man calling him ‘Light’ drives him nuts). He doesn’t really like the connection, and would prefer to have no name or a generic one over one picked for him by Dr. Light.

Hii it’s been a while since I was in the ask box, but I was recently hit with the recut brainrot once again, sooo AU idea for the episode where mega goes into the future (I forgot the name sobs), what if Timeman was faking being controlled? Like he secretly wanted revenge on Wiley for what he did to RIP (and Wiley was too stupid to know he was faking it). It’s just got so much angst potential. AND it’s a good way for the cousins to bond

That would have been a really cool espionage angle (and interesting additional world building for 'Wily's Future', haha!) I think it would have been pretty hard on Time Man to pretend to be reprogrammed (especially if he is still doing things like leaving humans frozen by Time Slow out for hours for breaking curfew to protect his cover), so I could see it really effecting his emotional well being by the time Mega Man showed up to help. Maybe things would have still ended up in the same place in the episode, but angst potential for sure. :D

If ProtoMan had or copied the ability to hypnotis people and bots (like probably mess with their coding or programming or something) for some kind of wily scheme, and he had the opportunity to hypnotis Mega or Roll during a fight, what would he hypnotis them to do? (Also, I'd imagine he'll have to take off his mask inorder to make eye contact with them)

I don't think Proto Man would actually like to have that power (especially if he had to take off his visor and make eye contact!) but otherwise I think it'd play out similar to the numerous canon hypnosis plots (Mega-Pinocchio in particular), like he'd use it tactically to aid Wily's scheme or whatever though he'd prefer to either fight Mega Man and Roll or join him willingly

Is this in response to @stitchieau-the-actual-one 's question about what Top Man would name a cat (if he owned one?) If so, that's super clever!

Okay, quick question. Is Elecman and Protoman going to be an otp or brotp?... just wondering

As an author, I don’t think I get to decide that for anyone. Do they have chemistry? Do they have a budding platonic relationship? I think it’s personal preference what everyone’s otp/brotops are? It’s kinda like, what’s your otp/brotp from MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE(™), and some might be like ‘Stony/Stucky/Free Bird/whatever (is it really ‘Free Bird’????) with Romanogers BROTP but then Marvel is like “Steggy is endgame” and its fine whatever but it’s not like that’s going to change anyone opinions on their otp/brotp? (Also, I’m sorry if the Marvel comparison doesn’t resonate, it and Harry Potter are the only popular series that I readily know ship names for. Sorry!). 

Also if people actually have recut otp/brotp I’m dying to know but too shy to ask  (and if you don’t ship that’s totally valid too both are alllll good)

How far into the series do you think Elec Man's story will go, bar you pushing it past that intended point?

Probably a little into s2, though I will likely write s3 concurrently if I can (the shorter chapters of the miniseries is a little easier to update when I get busy)
