Quickwitter’s questions because I‘m wired, can’t sleep, and have a compulsive need to answer questions when I see them.
You decide to get a very visible tattoo that describes who you are to people walking past you on the street - what is the tattoo? Where is the tattoo? Why this tattoo?
I don’t get tattoos for other people; I get them when I have a dramatic life change (as my father says). I have two: a stylized pentagram on my chest. The pentagram is a symbol for Venus and rebirth. I got it when I left my psycho ex and started rebuilding my life. It was a physical reminder of exiting that horrible period and starting anew. The second one is entwined dragons with runic script on my right thigh (thanks, unexpectedyarns- Nikki, for doing such a beautiful job). It’s an expression of the profound heartbreak I faced at the ending of two relationships that I thought would crush me, but didn’t quite. The script is runic so almost no one who sees it will know what it says.
What are your thoughts on adoption? Fostering?
This will make me unpopular. I’m steadfastly against infant adoption except in cases of abuse, including addiction. Having been active in the adoption community for 30 years, I know first hand the damage it does to a majority of birthparents and adoptees. I won’t get on a soapbox over it, but will leave it at that. I’m a proponent of fostering, and older child and orphan adoption.
Would you let immigrants seeking asylum live at your house? Why?/Why not?
Properly vetted, absolutely. Why? Because I’m a human being.
What was 5th grade like for you?
Terrible. All grades beyond maybe 3rd pretty much sucked. I was sickly, anxious, had a crappy home life, and grew up in a redneck community.
Favorite childhood pet? No pets, favorite childhood friend?
I had a cat. I adored her. She disappeared when we moved to a new house. My sister had a guinea pig that was cool as hell too.
Hurricane, earthquake, flood, fire - rank them and tell me what your criteria is for the ranking
All terrifying. Some more than others due to their unpredictability. With what’s going on in CA, fire tops the list of terrifying. The videos coming out give me palpitations. Second: earthquakes, also because of the lack of foreknowledge. Hurricanes can be avoided. You know they’re coming. Leave. Floods similarly. I may never understand folks who continue to live in places prone to hurricanes, floods, mud slides and such. If you’re financially able, why wouldn’t you move? Everyone has their risk assessment levels, but, for me, I’d move.
This being Veteran’s Day - Have you served in the military? Has anyone in your family? (Thank you if you have or are)
An uncle, aunt, three cousins, two ex husbands, step-grandfather, my son, and I were in the military. My father enlisted for Vietnam, but his horse fell on him before he shipped out so he never went.
Where do you see the US in 10 years? Where do you see yourself? How do you intend to get there?
If I’m still alive, I expect to still be here, with TT, doing basically the same thing I’m doing now. If Illinois gets any worse, I suppose we’ll be doing something similar somewhere else. If the country gets any worse, we’ll be doing it in a different country, maybe Mexico.
Which are you looking forward to most? Thanksgiving? Christmas (whatever dark month holiday you celebrate)? New Years? Why?
I normally love Thanksgiving, but my family is fractured so it gets more and more difficult, and all I feel is the loss. I’m trying to avoid it this year entirely. I like the winter holiday (pick your name) because I get to give people things without them wondering if I have an ulterior motive. I loved the family gatherings that lasted most of the day. The silliness and laughing, the wine, the conversation. We haven’t had a good one in about six years, and I still have a hard time adjusting.
Do you watch/follow sports? Which?
Nope, sorry.
Favorite Band? Why?
Tough.....I rarely turn off Pink Floyd, Queen, or Rascal Flatts, to name a couple three. There’s a feeling that comes with certain music - you all know that feeling; I don’t have to explain it. I get pulled into my head with ephemeral visions, memories, random thoughts and feelings. It’s like waking from a dream when a song ends.
Oops forgot the questions

@stephiehell tagged me.
1. what is the most often misunderstood or misinterpreted emoji? what is the misconception?
I’m not an emoji person, I find them sort of confusing
2. urban | suburban | rural pick one and tell me why.
There’s a big part of me that wants to sell everything here and to move to a big piece of land with a little house on it. I’ve always had that dream, since I was a kid even though I’ve been a City girl most of my life. I was born in San Francisco but grew up on a small town on the coast, and then in a tinier town inland where our street dead ended in miles of cattle pasture. I went to college in New York City. I live in Los Angeles County now but in a funky little canyon not far from the City. I love the semi-rural place I have now where on some days more horses than cars come by my house, but I’m still 20 minutes from an urban place. I don’t know how well I’d do in a fully rural situation.
3. what is something you do that harms you, and you fully understand the harm it will do, yet you continue to do it?
Lately, being less active than I should be. In part as I have a hernia, but that’s only part of it. Depression is another part, though I know being more active helps me to be less depressed.
4. what part of your body or physical feature do you think is your best?
My sister asked me once and I said my eyes, she said, nope your hair and walked out of the room. So, I used to think my hair, but it’s gone now since I had to shave my head when I had cancer. it’s growing back in fast but i want to do something unusual with it now because I never have. Then we’ll see.
5. what is the most common reason you can’t sleep?
Anxiety and being too in my head. But lately it’s been more frickin’ dogs barking all night long at raccoons/opossums/coyotes. Also, honking peacocks, and crowing roosters. It’s not for everyone and sometimes not even for me.
6. how would you describe your skin?
DRY lately, Our humidity here in So. Cal has fallen below 15% this week, and with all the fires, probably lower. And it shows my age ;) I lived on a boat for a few years and got a LOT of sun, also spent a lot of time laying out by a pool or at the beach. No regrets though.
7. long hair | short hair pick one and tell me why.
Appropriate question. I have almost always had long hair, and since it was thick and wavy I never had to style it, or blow it dry. Now it’s short and I don’t love it, but it’s been easy so far and that’s probably the biggest thing for me, ease. I don’t know if I will grow it back out or keep it short. I feel old now as it’s got a lot of gray coming in and I feel like a grandmother. I think I’m going to bleach it blonde and dye the tips purple or some such. Can’t decide.
8. what posts on facebook are the most disturbing?
A guy I blocked recently posted that Maxine Waters should be lynched. The pro-Trump posts are disturbing and never have links to actual articles. I realized people don’t care if what they are posting is true, it just isn’t what the Democrats are posting and that’s good enough. Everyone seems to tag me in anything chicken, that gets old, but I do have chickens so I kinda just roll with it.
9. would you fuck a married person OR fuck someone who isn’t your spouse? AND, if you have already done either of these things, would you have answered “yes” to this question before you had done it yourself?
Never say never but that said, I've not to date fucked a married person, and I’ve never been married so I’ve never cheated on a spouse. I was in a relationship for close to 20 years and I did not sleep with anyone else while he and I were together. I generally believe that, to be fair, one needs to deal with their own baggage before moving on to a new person.
10. what is your role in making the world a better place?
I try to give back where and when I can. My biggest concrete giving back has been to sponsor 175 micro-loans through KIVA.org - I started making loans through the Tumblr team when I first joined Tumblr in 2008/2009.
11. think of the worst time you got something in your eye. what was the thing that got in your eye?
I got a piece of grit or something in my eye during a windstorm several years ago. My old boyfriend had to leave work to come and take me to the emergency room. The doctor used a Q-Tip to roll up my eye lid to see what it was and that activity was enough to pop it out apparently. Suddenly, I was fine. They gave me drops but I really didn’t need them, I was fine.
I figure if I’ve gotten tagged, everyone has already been tagged at this point. :) If anyone wants to answer questions, you’ve been tagged!
