So the long anticipated draft of the annual Canada Day Fantasy Tournament, this year scheduled to occur on July 3rd in Brantwood Park, Ottawa (as per usual) happened more than a few pint-filled fortnights ago. The biggest news right off the bat is that registration so far is lighter than expected, and as such teams GOLLA and BERNIER were cut last minute before the draft to allow for fuller rosters on the remaining eight teams.
Secondly, there seems to be a storm brewing from the South of the border, and the Americans are once again attempting to begin a 1812-esque crusade. This idea is perfesctly summarized by the rare appearance of “jamieslefttesticle”, who commented on the livechat which accompanied the feed of the draft that, “jamieslefttesticle: it makes me sad how the first two rounds are dominated by americans. I wish canadians would get better.”
Perhaps in my experience of this event, never have there been so many top-American athletes present; which should provide an interesting flavour and flair to the tournament. Partially because many Cdn southern-based teams have little or no experience with the arguably more advanced styles of play American teams bring to the table. On reflection, many Canadian players have not had the chance to even interact with a variety of players in our community even. A minor downfall of Quidditch Canada is the static rankings our region always seems to deal with, which ultimately provides similar pools every. Single. Tournament. Growth = null… but that rant is for a later date.
BUT ANYWAYS GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, THE BEAVER AND THE BIEBER, IT’S THE CANADA DAY FANTASY TOURNAMENT PRE-SHOW!

Americans – Only 4. So a pretty Canadian team, despite the first draft picks being dedicated to Americans. It should be noted that according to USQ rankings, Rochester United (Sandon) finished 3rd, Emerson (Timothee Courouble) finished 87th and I have never bloody heard of whatever the Hell the Bearsharks are. Or to paraphrase GM Rosenburg when asking about Royal City “…What is a Bearshark!?” So not bad picks first round, I’m assuming LaFrance knows the subsequent Ottawa-area picks. Ottawa-based players are pretty much their own mafia. Team Canada players to look out for – Claire Steckle, Chaser with the GeeGees. One surprise – Mendoza, the Chaser/ Seeker combo from Edmonton. I haven’t seen her play, but man if she is beating two Queens and a Maple Rush player, then man she must be killin’ it. It should also be noted that LaFrance has acquired only two seekers – Courouble and Mendoza, five-ish Chasers, five-ish Beaters, and at least three keepers. Jeeze only three female chasers though. Be prepared to run, ladies.
LaFrance has historically killed it, so I expect that if his team stears clear of injuries, hangovers, female chasers keep their spend the early round Americans deliver as expected to, the team will give a splendid performance behind Archibald and LaFrance.
