Hoping to build a home server, I got a cheap extra-strong heatsink with the plan to not add noisy fans in the computer.
Here it is screwed onto the motherboard, the metal rod-grill monster on the left. It’s... bigger than I thought. But rather than admit to a mistake, I obviously doubled down.
The way it is, is the only orientation it even fits on the board. Unfortunately, where it juts out over the edge is where a computer’s power supply unit normally goes.
So I ripped out the computer’s front panels and mounted the power supply unit there, where the CD or DVD drive would normally be. Due to the positioning of the power connector on the unit, this was again the only way to fit it.
The power unit seen on the inside of the computer – it’s held in place by jamming cardboard around it, some duct tape, and a guitar string tied across the back to keep it from falling right inside the computer case.
While at it, this case doesn’t have a good place for a second hard drive. But it’s ok, I screwed it to the case on one side, and the other side can rest on a carefully cut half of a cocoa can, also duct taped to stay in place.
And it’s alive! It runs on Archlinux, by the way. You know what they say, a little frankensteining never hurt anyone.
