These are the last days of October when all the wild, bright color is gone from the woods and when the sunny, hectic summer months are over and the rains of autumn have passed. I think of this time as an aftermath—after all the growth and upheaval and renewal of a new season are accomplished—a period of calm before the winter. The colors are now intriguing. Floating in my canoe on this beautiful, still lake in the vast silence of the north country, subtle variations, shifting patterns of light, lovely greens and reflections can be quietly studied. - N.
