I'm sorry if you've answered this before, but... most vintage quilts I've seen have been in rough shape, or fragile at best. How do you work around or compensate for that while making them into coats?
This is a great question! I am picky when it comes to vintage quilts that I will repurpose! Some quilts I come across are beautiful, but they aren't good candidates for repurposing due to too much staining, holes, fraying, mold, or broken-up batting. Many vintage quilts can be repaired, it's just a little more work. I do not use valuable, excellent condition quilts to make garments.
I would also say that I have a lot of experience when evaluating the conditions and values of vintage quilts. I like to buy in person so that I can get all the info I need. Researching and seeing quilts in person can help you determine if there is value and more life in a quilt. I look for quilts that aren't perfect but are in good enough condition to hand wash. If it isn't immediately clear if I can wash a quilt right away, I will mend the quilt before washing so it doesn't fall apart or get damaged further in the wash.
Since each coat is one of a kind, I have the ability to work around any unwanted parts of the quilt with my pattern pieces. When cutting into the quilt to make the coat, I first lay my pattern pieces out on the quilt to optimize the most usage of the textile and to avoid any areas that are too damaged. Sometimes a quilt may have a large hole or stain but the rest of the quilt is great.
It's also important to note that these coats aren't made to be washed in a modern washing machine. Just like a wool sweater, a special dress, or a suit, you have to take special precautions when it comes to cleaning the garment. Which is totally ok! Since I sell many of the coats I make, I always note the condition of the quilt and the care that needs to be put into it in order for the customer to fully enjoy their piece for many years to come. The customer is aware that they are buying a garment made with old textiles and they WANT that vintage, roughed-up look. I also include scraps of the quilt as a mending kit for the customer if they need to mend the coat in the future.
