Eurovision Fact #1061:

In a meeting of the new RÚV board in May, the majority of members agreed that:

"If a proposal is made at the EBU level to expel the Israeli public broadcaster from the organization and/or the song contest due to the Israeli government's actions towards the residents of the Gaza Strip, the RÚV board will recommend to the Icelandic Public Broadcasting Corporation to support such a proposal after consulting with the board."

While reporting on the above statement from RÚV, the situation in Gaza, and the the soft power of the Eurovision Song Contest, journalist Stefán Jón Hafstein at Icelandic news organization Vísir proposed the following options for how to handle Israel's participation at the contest:

Israel's participation in the contest should be suspended until international investigations with conclusive results are available.

Israeli artists who declare their support for the EBU core values, including human rights for all, can be allowed to participate under a neutral flag.

Adhere to human rights standards, using Russia's expulsion from the contest as an example.

11/3-2017 became the day when Alexander Rybak performed in two national ESC-selection finals on the same evening :-)

In Swedens Melodifestivalen 2017, he performed as an actor, playing the character William in a parody of the popular Norwegian TV-series SKAM.

While the parody was shown in Sweden, Alexander appeared as a surprise-guest on stage in the Final ESC-selection show in Iceland.
